best to start with
just a quick question i was wondering what you think is the best to start with and why
solider, scout, scroundal??

In my opinion it's all about personal preferences, what you want to get out of your character.
In my first play through I went with a soldier/ guardian build, since then I've alway's used scoundrel/ sentinel build's, for the extra skill point's + the added bonus of being able to repair, unarm mines, hack blah, blah, blah without the need to keep on changing party member's.

Word of advice: skills count for next to nothing on your PC (except for healing and persuading, IMO). You can have characters in your party who easily learn various skills you need.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

Repair... HK needs his memory back.
Admittedly Player skills are more useful in 2 rather than 1...

Never bothered with it, as HK will get it back, anyway.
And if you're going to give away inside information about the game, use SPOILER, or put it in black on black. I've changed your post accordingly. Next time, I'll delete it.

You get some interesting inforamtion. Half the time I tend to drop my skill points into things I do often, just so that I don't need to switch characters every time I encounter a computer.
Besides, when you play a scout, those points have to go somewhere.

scout is usually my first choice, nice mix of skills and feats, best saves, decent attack, decent hit points, free implant feats at levels 1 and 4. well rounded solid foundation to build on, can't go wrong w/ this one.
scoundrel also has merits, more skills, feats not quite so good - but still not bad, sneak attack and defense bonus. with the right support can be very handy in a lot of situations (a lot of party support in using stun / distraction to create sneak attack chances for example). in class persuade makes early life a little easier and more interesting. in the right mix, very good maybe more powerful then scout but slightly more fragile then scout.
soldier is my least fave, paltry skills, more feats - at the same time their defalt / starting feats aren't as usefull to me as the scouts or scoundrel, ie heavy weapons, heavy armour, power attack. imho this is too much of a drawback, if i really want a heavy armour type it's just as easy to take the heavy armour feat w/ a scout.

fable raises a fair point about the relative weakness of skills (i might even go a step further and declare healing as worthless as the rest) pursuade still seems solid and worthwhile - also bear in mind your pc is always the talker in any conversations that rely on pursuade an npc cannot cover you there.
while other party members can fill in those gaps, almost 2/3rds of the npc's are near worthless in the skill department, the other 1/3rd can be very handy with skills but tend to lack punch in combat.
i prefer to have at least rudamentary skills, where my pc can cover absolute minimum skills in stuff like security, demolitions, computer, repair. and if the situation is right i can swap my team around to add a big brain if needed, or adjust equipment to modify skills i need to use. consider that there may be times when your ideal party isn't available. one caveat - i do like having a max skill demolitions "minesweeper" w/ my group when possible - mines are easy money.

swgamanda, if it was to ask a question from us t help you decide, then perhaps it would be a good idea to tell us your preferences for the game.

Scout/Sentinel was my favourite, excellent feats from the scout (possibly better then the fighter), decent skillpoints from scout and the sentinel, which has the best skill progression of the Jedi classes.
Skills may be less required in most parts of the game, they do add variety to your options and though fighting is required, it's not so hard that you'd need the best possible combat character to finish the game.
In general for rpg's a fighter type is usually recommended for a first playthrough, since these tend to be easier to play then rogues and spelcasters.

I went the soldier route, but then switched to the Jedi type with the most powers. Nice combo, that worked well; but really, any combination can be made to the work in the game, since the combat is so incredibly easy.

my favourite is scout/consular but thats just because it suits my style of play. i like having a few skills but not too many and the consular allowed me to mainly focus on force powers in battle rather than melee (i went the dark route and those powers can do so much damage to everyone. used them to kill pretty much everyone but malak in the final battle. even defeated him in no time using nothing but them on the laviathon). going to try soldier/guardian this time and go the good route for a bit of variation though. tried scoundrel but didn't really like it as sneak attack was a bit of a waste of time for me (although i never got very far into taris before i gave up)
I've played a number of games, and only found a marginal difference in the "what is best" catagory between the characterclasses. It is simply the switching of strategy used and thusly whom you'll have in the party.
In my view there is no best - sure there likely is if you crunch the numbers in comparison with a specific playing style - but for me there is no best.
The most fun for me in SW:Kotor1 was Scouts as starting class.
