My major question is this: Do you gain influence by going with a NPC's ideas, and lose them by disagreeing? E.X. say Carth says "I don't trust this guy!" If you then trust the guy, will Carth like me less?
Party Influence
Party Influence
I originally got KotOR 2 and just got KotOR, so the K1 influence thing is confusing me. The game never says I've gained/lost influence with anyone, but I've progressed nicely through the personal storyline of a few characters, plus I've influenced their alignment.

very perplexed by K1's system.

There is no actual influence system, although becoming closer to other characters and going through timelines advances characters histories and personal sidequests, something that was lacking in the second one.
There are many differences between the two, so if you have any questions, feel free to post them.
BTW, your side characters also tend to interact on the field, instead of just on the ship this time, and some are pretty funny. They also notice and comment if you do good deeds, or other things. Once, I force persuaded someone, and Mission commented that she was pretty persuasive, but that I was something else.
Off topic I know, but I particually like Carth and Canderous's interaction with each other... very amusing....
To tell you the truth, I thought that the Bastila/Mission one was the best, but that is just my opinion.
I went and checked, but I think that the more you agree or think like a character, the more you can worm out of them. If you joked when Bastila tried to talk to you, then she will think you as childish, but if you were serious, your image in her eyes goes up.![Smile :)](./images/smilies/)

There really isn't an influence system in Kotor I. So long as you aren't a complete prick to anyone and say something like, "Are you still going on about that?" (which is a rough quote of something you can say to Juhani at some point) then they will keep talking to you. If you are flirty with Bastila, Carth, or Juhani (depending on your gender and... er, sexual orientation) then you get the romance dialog, but other than that, you can't really influence your party members per-say.
I also don't think that you can actually affect their alignment. You can convince them to do dark side or light side things (Juhani can take revenge on her father's killer, Canderous can forgive Jagi, that sort of thing), but I don't think that affects their official alignment. I could be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can do to push one character over to the dark or light side. That's a Kotor II thing.

Carth: Why didn't you free yourself? Why didn't you just draw your lightsaber?
Bastilla: My lightsaber was... misplaced...
Carth: You lost your lightsaber?
The Carth/Mission one was good, as was the Bastilla/Jolee one with Bastilla trying to persuade Jolee to rejoin the Jedi order.
What you say in each conversation has no effect on following conversations - only on the PC's alignment - NPC alignments are fixed (Except for one... not saying who...)

How KOTOR I dialog works is, you can only speak with a character on a certain topic once you have reached a certain level/XP. Until you reach the alicated XP/level through either fighting or proceeding through the game you cannot speak with the character about their life story.
In some ways I prefered KOTOR I's dialog system to II. I could say what I wanted and still learn more about the character. Although, KOTOR II teaches players to think before they say.
