Turn undead and Heart of Fury question

Post by RongWay »

Why does turn undead not work in heart of fury mode? Why should an ablity be taken away just because the bad guys hit harder?

Or is there something wrong with my game?

It works, but you need about 10 levels more. My dualclassed solo cleric29/mage could turn each undead enemy (including all Severed Hand and Burial Isle fights) except the spectral heroes in the TotL final battle in HoF mode.

Level 12 cleric. Not high enough?

No.

In 2nd ed. D&D, upon which IWD is based, the probability of a successful turning was calculated based on two factors: cleric level and undead level, often represented by "hit dice". A level 10 cleric would have 10 hit dice, for example.

If 'x' is a monster's hitpoints in normal mode, a monster's hitpoints in HoF mode is something like 3x + 100.

I've been told that the hit dice of monsters in HoF mode are calculated backwards from their hitpoints. I'm not sure if that's true, but turn undead is certainly harder in HoF.

I've charged through the early stages of HoF (Vale of Shadows) exploding undead with a high level (20+) paladin. I had a ranger/cleric with an effective turning level maybe five levels lower (about 17) that could only turn skeletons, not destroy them.
When your back is against the wall... the other guy is in a whole lotta trouble.
