Windows in OBLIVION -- Clear or 'Fake' Again?

Post by Dyre Straits »

One of the little -- and I do mean 'little' -- annoyances with Morrowind is that, whenever one enters a building where there are windows, you cannot see through the windows to either side. I'm sure there a good explanation for it due to perhaps it requiring much more resources.

But, in so many other games I've played this is a non-issue and you can see both ways through windows.

So, does anyone know the answer to this? And, with whatever the answer is, is there an explanation?

Thanks!

I don't know any more than you do - but it was more than a minor annoyance for me in Morrowind! Iirc, you couldn't see through windows in Daggerfall either - so it seems to be a general failing by Bethesda for this series.
To be fair, some other games I have played have also had this failing, or have had unmoving 'pictures' of interiors and exteriors.
But since some games, as you say, seem to have no problem with the view through windows, I hope Bethesda now has it's act together in this regard.

it may not

I really don't think they will because there are so many variations of thing that could be inside. It would take to much room in the game.

Not really, it would just have to load more than one cell, which I think it already does.

(keep in mind that Im no techie, but I think thats how it works) :)

Morrowind's problems with this were memory-related, but with the increased RAM requirements, who knows...?

I would like them to save the memory for more important things like the house its self. It would be cool if you could actually open cabinets and really see what is inside.

To answer the original question: based on present matieral (screenshots, demo videos etc.) the windows are 'fake'. I agree these were a slight annoyance however it looks much less claustrophobic as they have brightened the windows on the inside :) which is suprisingly a big improvement. Also the windows are atleast a shade of blue this time round, rather than that awful dull Dunmer green.

According to preview videos from CES, I guess it is not possible to see through the windows, which looked rather grey-blue. I think there is no possibility to open a window or to break it. For a player who playing thief or an assassin it could a nice option. Alternatively, if you are bad guy, how about to use some nice fireball spell and let’s smoke them out?

no opening/breaking/looking through windows at all. the interior is all differet cells, if you wanted windows to work like windows, everything would have to be on an exterior cell, the inside and outside, which would be bad, since land is there, and cant go to basements or anything, cant go below ground lvl. different types of cells man, different types.
