TOB: Special Abilities at high level not working

Post by Der Rabbi »

What gives? When my higher level characters are leveling up they are all being offered special abilities but the magic user ones don't ever show up in the game. The fighter ones do but not the magic user ones. What gives? Is there a patch for this? If so could someone post the link? thanks.

The high level abilities for mages don't show up in the special abilities button. They show up as level 9 mage spells that you have to memorize and level 7 cleric spells for clerics.
Viconia:Minsc, that tattoo on your face, does it have tribal significance or did some nursery's fingerpainting class assault you with the blue pastels?
Minsc:I do not like the tone of your voice, Dark Elf.The face I have isthe face the ladies love! Boo loves Minsc's face, too! Don't you,Boo?

Mage and cleric Special Abilities are spells and have to be memorized as 7th or 9th level spells for cleric and mage respectively.

Does it give you an extra slot in that level or does it just allow you to know the spell without writing it from a scroll?

You simply know the spell w/o having to copy it from a scroll (in this case it is like how a sorc gets spells).

If you don't have many 7th (or 9th) spell slots available, I find that the high level abilities for the Mage or Cleric (and to a lesser extent the Druid) are a lot less usefull than the ones for other classes. There are a couple that shine (For Magi these are IMO Planetar, Aclarity, extra spells at lower levels; For a Cleric they are Elemental Summoning (and for a Druid Greater Elemental Summoning); etc) In short, you have to choose wisely.

This whole special ability thing is interesting, because it has really helped out the Multiclass character in ToB -- A lot of people thought that the Multiclass would be no good because they would never get any special abilities, but it seems like the implementation of the abilities actually favors a combat/magic multiclass character, because when they run out of good "10th level" spells, they can take whirlwinds or assassinations or something. I have found that especially the cleric special abilities peter out pretty quickly and then you're left with nada.
May you walk on warrrrm sannd....
