Help with iPod

Post by Steven00009 »

Hey, i just got an ipod nano. I have some Learn to speak German cds that i want to put on it. I got them on there and on a play list, but how would i delete them from my library but not the playlist i have them on?
This is really frustrating because it mixes up my songs with grammar lessons.

I would have put this in Tech Support. ;)

Strange that it is mixing your songs and music together.

You have all your songs in one playlist? Well, go to your Media Player, click on 'Add' and then go down to New Playlist/New File, whichever it is on your computer. From there, you can choose what files you want to shift over.

Also, I think there is a choice to move individual files in order to the iPOD.

If you move them in order, it shouldn't mix with the music, and if you give them the same album name or something, then I think that it will be fixed as well. :)

To answer your original question, no. The playlists simply display the songs in the same group from the library, I believe. :)

No, i dont want the German cd files in my library, just one playlist. I just listen to my library. i dont want to have to listen to a playlist where all the songs are sorted, in the library i can shuffle 'em. So basically i just want to delete files from the library, but not the playlist. How do i do this?

Well, my playlists are always automatically dropped into my library. I don't know if you can remove them from the library without removing them from the playlist. I'm goint to check out if I can.

OK, I just put a song on from my new CD, and it went into my Library. I added a new playlist, dropped it in there, and then deleted it from my library. It worked. I am listening to it now.

Basically, just right-click on the song, go down the drop down that appears, and hit the 'Delete from Library Only' option. :)

*edit*

iTunes should work the same way. Strange. Perhaps someone else can help you.

Well, my version if itunes, on my PC, does not want to open, for some reason, so I was looking on the similarities on Windows Media Player.

Try to test something by downloading a song or something from a CD, then put it in a new playlist, then delete it. It should come with a pop up asking if you want to delete it from the library, or delete it from the entire computer. Just do the test with that playlist first. :)

If that does not work, then I really have no idea.

I've been working under the assumption that it is a glorified version of Windows Media Player that is more convienient for an iPod.

Does the iPod itself have this sort of menu?

If you delete something from your library in iTunes, you will lose it from your playlist, too. The library is where it stores the master data. What I would suggest is don't play anything from your library at all, just copy what you DO want to listen to to a playlist, and use that (after all it is only a link to the song you are copying to the playlist and not another copy of the song).

Copy your German stuff to one playlist, and all your music to another, then use your playlists instead of your library. I have multiple playlists, depending on mood and occasion. When you set a playlist going, it operates exactly the same way - ie you can set random selection, repeats etc etc.

If you want the German on your Nano, but not on your PC (or vice versa), you can delete it from your pc library, but just make sure you set iTunes not to automatically synchronise with your iPod on connection - otherwise any alterations to your pc will be transferred to your iPod - including any deletions.

If you delete (clear) something from a playlist, it remains in the library. If you delete (clear) something from the main library, you should be prompted. Do you want to send to recycle bin (delete permanently) or do you want to keep file in iTunes music folder. If you choose to keep it in the iTunes music folder, you still have a copy, but it won't be accessible to the playlists (though using Windows Explorer, you can locate the file and open it again, at which point it will be added back to your iTunes library).

I need help with mine, too. I filled mine up this week, and since there was more junk I wanted on it, I decided to delete some of the songs i didn't really listen to, which led me to decide to start from scratch.
I deleted absolutely everthing, loaded about 50 or so cd's, and tried to "update ipod". What I got was... "songs on the ipod "duke"(my ipod) cannot be updated because playlists selected for updating have been deleted", or something very close to that... Any suggestions?

It seems simple to me, but as I mentioned, I am working under the assumption that this has to do with a glorified version of Windows Media Player.

If you deleted everything, including playlists, then you have to remake you playlists and then move the files you want into that selected playlist, aye? You did delete them... it would make sense they no longer exist.

However, I have no idea what the 'Update iPod' does, as I do not own one. :) Does this move them onto the actual iPod? however, if this is the case, then it will be searching your iPod for the old files, and updating any that are different from the files from the computer. If there is nothing to update (the playlists are gone, so how can you add the songs to the said playlist?) then you might try to find a full download button or something. *shrugs*

I have a feeling that I don't know enough about the functionality of iPods to be a great deal of help here, so I would recommend waiting for Yshania to come back and save my bacon. :p

This should be in tech-support, so I'm moving it there, eventhough the discussion seems pretty well underway.
Leaving a redirect so you can find it again :)

In situations like this I would consider ringing up Apple's technical support for answers.
