BG2 Names

Post by Lasher »

I seem to remember reading somewhere(no idea where, though... Did a search and it wasn't on this forum...) about a few names in BG2 that were ripped off from... historical figures. I noticed that Ilyich is the middle name of my favorite composer Tchaikovsky. I thought it might be interesting if anybody else saw any.
Thanks

Ilyich isn't ripped off. The -ich and -ov suffixes in Russian means "son of," just as -ovna means "daughter of." It's a medieval survival, not unlike Davidson, or Johnson.

That makes sense, but why does that mean it wasn't ripped off? Is Ilyich a common name then?

Relatively. It was Lenin's middle name, as well.

Any Russian male first name can be treated in that fashion, and usually is. So to continue your composer's analogy, Dmitri Shostakovich, whose father was named Dmitri, was Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich, and his son the conductor Maxim, was Maxim Dmitryevich Shostakovich. His son, in turn, was the pianist named Dmitri, and became Dmitri Maximyevitch Shostakovich. :)
