Absence comes closer...
Rav asked his question 3 hours after Mag's statement...
So he did. Didn't notice that *crosses entry out of notebook*

My lovely theories are always being spoiled by ugly little facts, Ravager. It's the perpetual condition of the optimist. But "toujours gaie, archie" :D

What worries me is that Rav asked the question... I mean, Rav, you must be aware that between you doing the asking and Mag being back on line at least ten pages of spam will have been generated. :D

*shrugs* It's just continuity. It's easier to latch onto something said earlier than to think of something new.
Besides Mag normally does answer questions directed at him from many pages back. GB would probably load it as his first Unread post.

@Fiona, don't make me look up that phrase! :p

Sorry Ravager. It's just a catch phrase from Archie and Mehitabel (that's a daft book by Don Marquis. Archie is a vers libre poet reincarnated as a cockroach; and Mehitabel is a rather sluttish alley cat. The books are better than they sound from that description)

It means "Always gay, Archie". :D

Birdwatching, eh?

Oh, I don't know. Sounds like it could be interesting. :p ;)

@Lestat, I translated it as 'Always merry'. :p

Birdwatching?

Lestat, you have an....interestingly.........selective memory. Is it *hot* in there?

@ Ravager. A much more accurate translation, IMO :D

Birdwatching?
Well that's what gay was once supposed to mean no? ;)
For the birdwatching I suggest you read back to yestereve.

And in fact no, gai(e) in contemporary French has also the same connotation as gay in English, but in French the non-homosexual meanings/connotations are also still very much in use, but more when referring to situations.

Lestat, of course you are right it does officially still have both meanings in English. But, as you are aware, the original sense has been completely overshadowed. You can't really use gay that way anymore - too confusing/embarrassing. Lends itself well to posts like yours, though. Deniability, that's the thing

AC?
The overshadowing is less in France, it's in equilibrum. But it's still better not to say "Je suis gai(e)", when you want to say you're happy or merry.

I thought it was a general abbreviation sorry, Air Conditioner.

Must be, cos Rav knew it :D

In my defence I will say we don't have a lot of call for air conditioning here. I have only ever encountered it abroad :o
