i use ward of fire and ice a lot and noticed that sometimes i am briefly frozen (mainly if there are 3 ghost haunts or succubi), or burnt by demons or a drake, mainly pushed back out of melee range with only slight damage to my health, a shield negates this entirely, but i cannot fight when i am blocking.
if i throw more points into celestial will it help? i am at 10 now. same for nether and arcane, does it make fireballs more potent, or summoned giants or guardians live longer/do more damage?

yes and no lol.
the higher your arcane mage the higher you will hit.
the higher your rune mage the longer the spells will last for.
so far i have found no change in the celestial magics, there has been no change when i got my level in it up. your problem with the fire, it will happen. the spell protects your from most damage! it will push you back due to your characters pro fire rating (eg: 35%) the only time you will not be push back by fire and ice is when you have pro 100%, this means that it has no effect watso ever on you. the last relic is great for killing drakes and other npc's because it gives you pro 100% in everything.
