Dealing with beholders (SPOILERS)

Post by buffoni »

i was wondering if anyone can help me. i'm right now playing the quest- the cult of the eyeless, and i'm kind of stuck. first of all i'm can't kill the three monsters that await me- 3 gauth, they keep paralayze me, and not like other creatures, there spells are not running out eventually.
so i tried to get pass them by being invisible and got into a room with a monster that would not die, no matter what.
any ideas??

Hello, and welcome. :)

*minor tactical spoiler*

The easiest way is to go back to buy Balduran's Shield which cut down all the rays from gauth and beholders.

If you don't want to buy it (actually, this is a good opportunity to learn how to fight against those nasties), you need a bit of use of magic.

-use summons.
Summon Undead by priest/mage is the best, but if you don't have access to it yet, just cast anything and send them in. While the gauths are preoccupied with the summons, use bows and spells to take them down. Try to concentrate one at a time.

-use spell/potion/scroll for free action (can't remember the name).
cast on some of your fighters and send them in. Just check priest spells for protection spells.

By the way, it is a good idea if you write your question point at the title, ie. "Have problem fighting so-and-so, please help!" to get more attention from other members.
Also, if the question involves storyline or quests, put "spoiler" on the title to make sure someone who has not played this game through see the contents unwillingly.

Have fun!

Buffoni, welcome to the forums.

A few quick points: please put SPOILERS in a thread title like this, since the game still has new players. Also, try to make your thread titles more relevant to topic. That'll draw more knowledgeable folks to answer your questions. I'll change this one--you get to change the rest. ;)

Concerning your question: if you don't want to go the easy route and buy the Shield Minerva mentioned, have plenty of Minor Spell Turning spells ready through a nearby mage. It'll bounce incoming spells, up to level 7. The problem is that it never seems to store enough; but if you have the spell on your best fighter, along with Haste, you should do okay. Another mage with improved invisibility hurling Melf's Meteors wouldn't hurt, either, or perhaps some monster summonings from a cleric or druid.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

I think I know where you are; I got fried repeatedly at the same spot first time through.

What worked for me in the end was summoning a fire elemental and using Wizard Eye to control it from afar.

Welcome to the Gamebanshee forums friend! :D

I was just there myself a few days ago and I used a few well placed fireballs... After you die once or twice, you end up having some idea where they are in terms of the Fog of War blackness-stuff. So I moved as close as I could and targeted an area close to them with a fireball (I couldn't actually see them). Then I backed that chracter up a bit because I knew theyd be coming after me and cast another that would land right in there path. Eventually they got close enough, I thre anomen in their way (I can't stand him... ) and then cast yet another: anomen died from the combined effect of thier rays and the fireball, but they were pretty much dead by that time. Such area-effect spell tactics can be used in many such fights, if you practice with them it'll make the game alot easier. Have fun! :D
"Be thankful you're healthy."
"Be bitter you're not going to stay that way."
"Be glad you're even alive."
"Be furious you're going to die."
"Things could be much worse."
"They could be one hell of a lot better."

Spoilers

Best way to deal with the beholders is to use improved invisibility on a fighter or mage. Once your guy becomes visible hit the beholders with spells like magic missle and other good damaging spells and if its a fighter, naturally beat the tar out of them. They are worth a good amount of experience so don't miss this opportunity.

For the unkillable guy, just cast a healing spell on him (cure minor wounds) and he dies. He feeds on anger and hate and keeps resurrecting.

Hope that helps. Good Luck

Spoiler Beholder

I've found that invisiblity or improved invisibility combined with area effect spells, i.e. fireball, cloudkill. Use multiple party members if they can cast such spells. This should kill most of the gauths and reduce the beholders hp enough to rush in and mop up!

But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?

believe you, arent the first person to think its hard to kill numerous gauths lol.

I always get hammered by them as a group, so this time i sent in Nalia on her own. Essentially i put spell turning, minor globe of invurability and fire shield red up. Then got her to send in cloudkill and flameball. Almost all of the gauth's attacks rebounded upon themselves, and once they got near the fireshield kicked their asses quickly.

Sounds easy but to be honest, it was surprinsingly so. I guess its all about reflection with beholders.

cloak SPOILERS SPOILER

Also, as a worst case scenario if you just can't seem to get by them, you could wait to finish that quest. Along your journeys you will come across a cloak that makes killing beholders and gauths a breeze (I cleared out the whole screen with Mazzy by herself), BUT you won't be able to finish it for a VERY long time.
