That's good you didn't have to pay horrid prices, but no fun you couldn't bump your RAM up to 512.

I don't wanna go to work today. Lina got pissy I went to bed before she got back, and Lori and I should talk today before she goes to work, but I'll be at work. Stupid work.

I had 1x 128Mb already in the computer and I bought another 128Mb and a 256Mb (which is the maximum it can cope with). After trying lots of configurations having both 128Mb installed brought up a message that the Memory had changed and I could save it (that was fine and the computer could boot up).
However, when I installed the 256 (either with 1 or 2 of the 128Mb installed) the computer either froze or it got past a Scandisk check and gave me the Blue screen of death. Some kind of memory access violation. Always in pci.sys.
Also, the computer automatically saved the RAM settings when 512 was installed rather than prompting me when I had 2x 128 installed.
The BIOS showed 512Mb RAM installed fine, when I tried it.

I suppose I could always get another 128Mb RAM and fit that.
Or I could buy another 256Mb and fit both 256Mb at the same time (perhaps having the same size of RAM would help).

I'm going to get techinical here... just a warning.

Check the SDR, or DDR.

Make sure that whatever it is, your computer can handle it. If it's an old computer, then it won't be able to handle DDR, which is what RAM comes in nowaways, especially higher end stuff (256, as opposed to 128). If it's a newer computer, it may not be able to handle DDR3, and you might have gotten that, either way, if you haven't already, check that.

Hmm. I found a technical specifications sheet before I bought the RAM, so it should be the same.
PC133 DIMM SDRAM.

That was going to be my next point, about the PC 133/100.

I notice however that it is SD Ram, so perhaps your motherboard may not be able to handle 256, or alternatively, a total of 512.

Though once again, purely guesses, as I can't see the specs.

It can handle up to a total of 512Mb RAM I think.
And the RAM I have (unless mislabelled) is definitely PC133.

So in theory, it should work... in theory. However computers are notorious for having minor conflicts that stuff up, no one knows why, and no one can fix it.

I'd say your first bet is swapping the memory, and trying that.

Also, I notice you say you tried 256 with 1 stick, or 2 sticks of 128, have you tried with 0 sticks?

And my usage is in, I have 100mb for the next 3 days... it's looking more and more unlikely.

I'll have a go with that now I think. It should only take 10/20 mins to try and replace if it doesn't work. Then I'll be back.

How long does it take to use that much up then?
AFAIK my broadband connection doesn't have any limits...just the occasional random breakdown on the part of the suppliers.

Well we have 4gb for the month, and use about 100 a day in downloads. However it's been holidays for me, so I've been using more (not to mention a massive download over one night), and as a result, this is the first time we've come this close.

We don't get slowed down, just pay extra, which is a pity, as I'd prefer the former.

I tried it, it just froze soon after I turned the computer on.
I suppose I either chose the wrong RAM or it's faulty. *sigh* Looks like I'll have to return it.

If it's just downloads, why is it such a problem? Can't you still look through websites and just not download anything?

Yeah, I'd say the Ram has a problem.

Though there's one thing I hate about returning things, whenever they ask to see what's wrong, you take in the computer, it works perfectly, then you take it home and it stops working. Always annoyed me .

And I will not dignify that with an answer .

*nods* I'll have to return it to an online retailer, which is quite a bit of hassle. I've done it done it before though, so it shouldn't be too much trouble.
Hmm...I could buy some other manufacturer's version for £5 more (£21) than the one I have that doesn't work, or I could get the same product (an 'open box' version - must have been returned and fixed or something like that) for only £7!

Maybe your computer enjoys its holiday away to the computer store.

Try and keep the same brand, it's much more likely you'll have a conflict if you get different ones.

Well I beat the little sucker when we get home, nothing obvious, so next time they can't see . But we rarely take it in, seeing as we are all good with computers, so we can handle pratically anything.

The sad thing is, people actually think like that, that webpages aren't downloads.

I already have two brands of RAM in there, I can't tell what brand the original one is, though if it Compaq then it's about 4/5 times the price for the same utility as normal RAM.
I might be able to get hold of some RAM which is the same brand as the new one that works though.

Hehe. You say that now, but any day, the computer could fall over with a catastrophic failure.

Well, it is easy to think that. And I thought it was mainly cookies that were downloaded on visiting websites? (Unless you're playing any games that require at least a temporary download anyway).

Ahh, nothing like jacking up the price for people who will only believe in one brand. In that case, by all means by another one, don't pay way more for something you don't need. Though I love the ads targeted towards old people... Superfast 129megabytes or Ram, a 40gigabyte harddrive, a 1.7 gigahertz chip, and only for $2500... it's a scam.

Well, my thoughts are if the webpage is 356kb, then you download that. Then, you would download all other stuff that is linked, such as on this site the logo and banner at the top, the two flash ads, the gamebanshee swag pic, and any pop-ups you may get.

All that adds up, and when you refresh, you don't download those links, as they would be in temp, however you do download the page again, so 356kb each refresh... at least, that's what I think would happen, not certain.

Yeah, the manufacturers love to increase the prices on their upgrades. Dell does the same I think.
I'd never pay that much for a component unless I was forced to.
So, now I have to decide whether I want three different brands of RAM in this computer or I could just have two...

Ahh, that's true. I've just never really thought of websites as downloads really - I haven't needed to, beyond seeing that a page is loading slowly for whatever reason. I'd hate having a limit like that.
