Un>Re installing NPC mods

Post by Ishel »

Since a certain mod <cough>Item Upgrade</cough> bugged my poor Cromwell in a rather game breaking (for me) way and he stayed that way after an uninstall of IU, I decided that perhaps uninstalling and then re-installing all mods would help. But before I do that: is it possible to uninstall a NPC mod, re-install it and then continue playing in a save where you had those NPCs in your party? Or would that break certain things?

If the mod broke your install that suggests you may have installed/uninstalled him incorrectly, since Item Upgrade is a very stable mod.

In general the uninstall/reinstall routine will probably work. However, your journal entries and a few other text strings might get messed up because of the way the engine handles their storage. It would be safer to start a new game.

<chuckles> yeah my journal looked very interesting after the re-install.
I tried several times to completely uninstall all mods (I always keep a backup of my 'clean' override folder and chitin.key), and then re-install them, but nothing helps. So I just dumped IU, since I didn't really care about the new items that much anyway.

You'd need to remove the mod folders between reinstalling the game, since files for installed components are stored in their backup directories too. If you're getting persistent errors on reinstalls it suggests you may be consistently installing things wrongly... just in case, the order is game, official patch, mods.

Well *that* explains a few things :p I got the order of installs right, but I never removed those backup files.
Thanks :)
