For those of you that want an amazing fighter/thief or great character to be your number one tank, try this out:
Human Neutral Good Fighter/Thief (Level 9/X)
Statistics:
- 18 Dexterity
- more than 18/51 Strength
- 18 Constitution
- 9 or more Wisdom
Weapon Proficiencies:
- +5 Long Swords
- +2 Short Swords
- Wield Long Sword of Action +4 (+1 Attack/Round)
Rings:
- Ring of the Warrior Thief (+1 Attack/Round, +1 Strength)
- Ring of Reckless Action (+1 Attack/Round)
Armour:
- Chainmail Armor (AC: 2, +1 Dexterity, +20% Cold Resist, Still use thief abilities)
- Black Dragon Scale (AC: 4, +2 to Save Throw, +25% Acid Resist, Still use Thief Abilities)
Shield:
- Sundered Shield of Tiernon; or
- Mystery of the Dead; or
- Other +3/+4 to AC shields
Helmet:
- Blessed Helm of Lathander
Belt:
- Girdle of Ogre Blood (guarenteed); or
- Girdle of Labelas (somewhat random);
Boots:
- Boots of Speed
Make sure to use the potion the Potion of Strength Transferance if you find it. This will give him 18/01 strength and 19 dex. But the Warrior Thief Ring will put the strength back up to 19. (hence why you need more than 18/51).
Final Stats:
- Strength: 19
- Dexterity: 19 or 20
- Constitution: 18
- Wisdom: 9
Now you have a very fast, adaptable tank who can find traps and scout quickly, backstab and shred through armies of enemies, regenerate hits points or steal them with Blood Iron and lastly, provide all the abiltiies of a thief. I picked neutal instead of chaotic so I could use the The Red Knight's Shield and some other items along the way.
The ultimate fighter/thief
Only one problem, they removed ring of the warrior thief in HoW. You can always use Dalekeeper.
What is the THAC0 you project for a dualled fighter/thief?
Currently using a halfling fighter/thief (19/23 so still far from maxing out and thief abilities are all maxed out) and he has got a base THAC0 of 2. As a hafling you get good saving throws.
You have 3 opportunities to get gauntlets of ogre power (sets strength to 18/00). If you create a neutral aligned character, you can use ring of dwarven bone (random though) so you can get 19 strength if you wish and use girdle of ogre blood. As well as potion of strength transference for dexterity of 20.
Suggest shadowed studded leather +3 but it is in the later stages of HoW that you get it. AC3 vs. AC2 of chainmail but no crushing attack penalty to AC that chainmail gives.
Agree to give a good shield and since halfling suggest specialize in slings for missile weapon due to their bonus and can still use shields while doing so.
If you can get boots of the fox (random item though) it is even better than boots of speed (a sure thing) due to AC bonus.
How do you use your thief by the way? I always prioritize stealth and pickpockets last (I hesitate to use backstabbing until their THAC0 gets better and if you have a bard then pickpocket is last). If you have a spellcaster, my favorite is just cast invisibility and have the thief disable all the traps in the area first before waltzing in the party.
Oh and I would suggest helm of trusted defender for this character so you can use helm of lathander for your other/main tanks.
