HoW installation during a campaign

Okay, I'll admit I've been out of the whole IWD, HoW, TotL, loop for awhile. Got suckered in by some RTS. So how does this HoW thing work anyway. If I'm in the middle of an IWD campaign, do I just install it, and it doesn't muck up my game? Do have to have finished IWD. If I install during a campaign does it wipe my characters out? Please advise.

Installing HoW will not affect your IWD save game or campaign in any way. It *will* modify monster AI and items yet to be found (and on rare occasions, items you already have).

How you play yhe expanision is up to you - you either complete IWD then import your save into HoW, or you can physically travel to the HoW locations and return to IWD after finishing the expansion.

The same is true for Trials of the Luremaster.
