Allowing exceptions in the swear filter?

Post by Rookierookie »

While reading through the anime thread I realized that how many words were blocked. I understand the need for a swear filter and the reason why the forum is so hard on swearing, but would it be possible to set rules in the swear filter that causes it to ignore certain words that contain a word that could be used as a swear?

Case 1: C0ckroach. Is it possible to let the swear filter ignore this particular word?
Case 2: Post 61
Is it possible to cause the swear filter to ignore a potential swear word if it it not stand-alone, that is, having letters either before or after it, or at least when it has both letters before and after it?

Withouth knowing how swearfilters are set up in this forum, such distinguishing would be difficult in most software. So I wouldn't expect that to be plausible.

Case1: I don't know withouth specific insight into the way the filter is implemented in this software.

Case2: That would requier an algorithme ala what is found in various spam-filters, which I doubt is integrated into this board.
Using the word as standalone and only filter that out, doesn't filter all the swearwords out where the word is then grouped with for instance "sucker".... and so on ;)
It would be less failsafe then simply filter the word out alltogether and then live with the annoyances of where it is legit

I'm not going to argue on the need to filter out words such as <swear>er, but technically, isn't it possible to filter out, say " Rookierookie " (that is, <space><word><space>)?

There are only twelve words that are censored in these forums, and many of them have been set up to catch the word itself and any string of characters including the word.

However, not long ago, I did make a change to a couple of the words so that your example in Case 1 wouldn't be censored. If I place a word in curly brackets (for example {sword}), then it only looks for that specific word. A word like swordsman wouldn't be censored, but just sword would appear as *****. Therefore, cockroach shouldn't be censored (I'm sure you can guess how I set that up...). If you're viewing older posts, then they might have fallen under the old censorship setup.
