Mmm, I finished the trial, and I have the letter of Galebriand. I was happy. But those Fathien guards attack me and the door remains locked.
What went wrong, and is there any other way to enter Ulm? I play this time with patch 1.4.
Any help would be very welcome.

The guards outside Ulm attack you, and you haven't been inside yet? That sounds like a bug. The guards shouldn't attack you until you leave Ulm.

Yes, I thought so, but I was hoping for a cheat or something. I now reinstalled the game with the English patch 1.4, But the bug is still there, of course.
But do you know if there is a difference between the English and German patch? I mean is it better to start all over (6th time) or start over that stupid trial (5th time)? Yeah, I beat the game once.

I have had the same problem. I got through it OK in 1.3, but this bug showed up in 1.4. I have the English version of 1.4. I have started a new game an d am working to get to this point again and see if the same thing occurs.
I don't know if having the position of the first room inside the castle would help or not. With a character editor, you could change your position to just inside the gate. I do know the the interior of the castle is in a different area than the exterior, so moving your character 'forward' into the castle will only put you in the castle with invisible walls. You will be able to see the exterior, but not go anywhere in the 'castle interior".
