When I purchased my game it was already 1.3 version. Played the game and finished it. I decided to create a different char and play again with it updated to 1.4. So I decided to uninstall, then just run the 1.4 update since it was already 1.3. No problems, and I checked it when launched and it shows the 1.4 version like it should if things went well.
I went for the very first chest behind the broken wall behind Simon. When I got a different weapon from it, I noticed in my inventory, it just said "weapon" with question marks around it and where it tells you range, stats, etc for the weapon/item, its just question marks, like the game doesnt even recognize it.
Wierd stuff, has anyone else had this? Now the stuff you start with, in my inventory, is displayed correctly. Any help for this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

this is a new skill as of v1.4 - "Identify" and depending on your skill... you can identify what you pick up from chests, dead guys, etc... or, I guess you could pay some shopkeeper to identify it for you... I found the skull thing that only seems to be worth gold in v1.3 - but now it raises my armor by eight points! cool... but I have zero chance to identify it...
What you're experiencing is the newly instituted Identify/Identify skill at work. If you click on the item while it is in your inventory you will have a chance to identify it. If you are using a rogue character you will have the option of improving your id skills. Otherwise, there are only a couple of other non-thief class options for identifying items, all of which are tier 2 or perhaps 3.
When you try it, it will list the chance you have of identifying the item based on your id skill, which is base level to start. If you identify an item you can continue to id items until you fail once. Then you must rest to reset the skill. This takes about 5 hours at a campfire or hearth. Make sure to id everything you get before going into the sewers. Also note that every time you identify and sell all of an item in your inventory you will have to re-indentify it when you pick it up later. It’s a pain. All sellers can id items for you at a price, which is sometimes no gold at all.
So, choosing a class with id skill or not is a fundamental choice in character building now.
Identify is now a problematic skill for chest poppers. Whether or not you want to mine chests for elite items by saving and reloading at chests is an important consideration, although most armor types and many shields are easy to figure out un identified if you know what to look for.

Hi
What you are getting is the identify function of the character and picked up items. This wasn't working in 3.1 same as scout skill and repair didn't work in 3.1 but is working in 4.1
