Console RPGs

Post by Bloodmist »

Hey, everyone! Good to see most of you are still going strong. :)

I just recently aquired a PS2 (I know, I progress slowly through the market) and I would like to play some RPGs on it. I'm getting pretty fed up with sportsgames (you can't play 'em alone, you know) and shoot-em-ups, and I was wondering if any of you had some advice on what to throw my money after?

I'm looking for something story-driven but also with action. I realise that most of the people on this board play their games on pc, but I don't really have that option anymore.

Any advice for a fellow gamer? :)

I don't play console games myself but I've watched my son play them.

From what I can gather, the KOTR (Knights of the Old Republic) games seem to be about the best of the bunch.

Some people also like the Final Fantasy games.

While more so in the category of 'Action Adventure' you might also want to check out the Prince of Persia series. Lots of intricate sword and jump manoeuvres, sexy graphics and quite story-driven.

Jade Empire is fairly decent as well, but I can't remember if that is for XBox or PS2.

well there is also the BG: Dark alliance series, and The Champion games which although not the same games are very similar in every way except the history part :P

Edit-- OH and by the way, Jade Empire is not for ps2

Neither are the KotOR games...

I play my RPG games on PC... You can't mod on the PS2...

A lot of the PS2-based RPG's are quite cartoony... If that appeals, I heard about a game called Dark Cloud (?)...

There is the staple Final Fantasy games (with all from XII to X-2 available, including Tactics, and XI, an MMO, being available). Other decent RPGs are:
  • Grandia III
  • Romancing SaGa
  • Suikoden
  • Wild Arms III
  • Radiata Stories
  • Dragon Warrior VIII
Those are the ones just off the top of my head, and I am sure I am neglecting some of my own library.

One of the best bets, though, is that when it comes to Console RPG's, Square-Enix is usually a safe publisher to go with.

Summoner 2 is an action RPG in which you use a mix of the fighter genre types in combat. It kept me intrigured for much longer than most other games. It is for the PS2, and it is the only game of my collection I have yet to sell since my PS2 was stolen. If you are into a game of that nature, I would suggest giving it a try. It has been out for at least 3 years, so price shouldn't be too steep. ;)

Oops!
Sorry about the KOTOR and Jade Empire references. My son was given an XBox in addition to the PS2 we bought for him  So I have trouble keeping them straight. :o

You can actually mod your ps2 games with the program called USBextreme and an external HD like the HDadvances, though I'm not sure how to do it, I just know it can be done ;)

Yeah, don't let's beat up on DW; she did say she doesn't play console games.

I got a PS2 last August, and I've only got like 2 games for it, and I never play either of them. Some people like Kingdom Hearts; I got it, didn't like it much at all. But that's me.

All of the RPGs I play on my PS2 are ones that came out for the PS1. That said, Vagrant Story is wicked awesome. A lot of the new RPGs out just don't appeal to me. Most of them seem all cartoony, or are anime... and I hate anime.

it would seem that PS2 is more focused on the 'action adventure' category whilst most mainstream RPGs are realeased for XBox

Well if you don't mind something a bit stranger and non-linear than normal, Dark Chronicle is a good choice. Wild Arms 3 is rather good in a more traditional way.

if you want something rather different - and quite capable of devouring your free time for a few months at least - then look for some of the Nippon Ichi games. my personal favourites are Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom.

and I would disagree strongly with penguin_king. the xbox does have some of the high-profile RPGs like fable and so forth, but there is a simply huge range of RPGs for PS2 (admittedly, some of them fairly derivative, but I can see 12 PS2 RPGs just sitting on the shelf in front of me - and that's about the total number of RPGs available for the xbox...)

oh, and I agree about vagrant story, it's one of the only PS1 games I still play. unequaled atmnosphere and style

I don't know where you got that impression.

The RPG game making giant, Square Enix supplies their games to Sony. Dragon Quest and FF series are the obvious choice, but also Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Radiata Stories, and Romancing Saga are all from this company. It is strongly suggested that one of the major reason for the recent reshuffle in MS management team in Japan is their failure to get the exclusive rights from Square Enix to publish next generation consoles games.
Also, there are Tales of series and Suikoden series are both well established and only on PS2.
As for Xbox, well, I am sorry I cannot think of any. I can even name one Zelda for GC...
