gothic 1 storyline? (obviously spoilers lol)

Post by mr_sir »

ok, so just watched the intro scene to gothic 2 and had the first conversation in the game. can anyone explain to me what actually happened in gothic 1, as far as the story is concerned? i have gathered that some people were imprisoned and your character defeated the big bad monster and saved them all then nearly died. just confused as to why they were imprisoned and what that monster actually was and what its part in the original story was. i realise i should really play the first gothic game but i don't have it and really want to play the second one which arrived today. just so much of it is confusing and i'm not sure if it will ever get explained seeing as it continues from the first story - like who is the wizard guy that sent me to kill the monster in the first gothic and who then brought me back from near death in the intro to gothic 2?

Well

In Gothic I you find yourself thrown in a prison, named Valley of Mines. This prison had a trick, nobody could get out, even the officials, cause of one mistake the mages did creating the magical barrier around the prison. Even those mages were inside and can't leave.
You go through the story developing your character and following the main thread that took you towards breaking the magical barier.
You obviously did that, but got cought in the big bang of the barrier and Xardas, the Dark Arts magician, saves you as you've seen in the movie at the biginning of Gothic 2.
Why don't you try playing it first? It's the best idea.

I played Gothic 2 first, then Gothic and finally Gothic Night of the Raven.
Gothic is based on NPC interaction, so you will meet several NPCs whom you knew before many as friends ( at least companions).

Xardas you meet late in Gothic and you join with his plan to defeat the Sleeper and escape the Barrier.

Most important is to make sure you comfortable with the controls or if you dont mind spending the better part of several hours then leave them defalut.
Setting the controls to Gothic 1 OFF, will give you more easy controls making it easier to get started, thou once you get some experience playing the game under your belt or second time thru try out Gothic 1 controls.
Gothic 1 controls require you to time your left, right, block and combo swings, while timing and adapting to your enimies swings.
Humans and Monsters (i.e. Orcs) can and MUST be blocked, animals can not be blocked.

Ok, Gothic 1 light.
Start movie begins as you are being thrown in to the Penal colony of Korinis, the Valley of Mines.
Anyone whom commits a crime no matter how big or small is thrown in to the mines, becasue King Robar needs Ore to fight the overwhelming Orc armies devestating his Kingdom.
Until now the Kingdom has never been in danger due to the powerful leadership and armies of the King.

Your crime, if you even commited a crime is not discussed as the Judge is reading your sentance he is intrupted by High FIre Mage (Priest of Innos, God of Life) whom ask you to deliver a message to the Mages trapped within the Barrer.
(The Barrier was constructed to confine the prisoners and protect the Ore but as the 12 Mages cast the Spell to create it something went wrong, a presence Magnified it and it grew many times bigger, trapping even the Mages whom cast it.)
You refuse the offer but persistant the Mage tells you of a great reward, which you will be allowed to choose, with a smile you accept, on a condition that you are spare the blabbing of the Judge.

Mages are the keepers of the Holy Words of Innos, sort of Mage/Preist and Holy Paladians protect the Mages, so he has power even over Judges and agrees, outraging the Judge. :)

You are cast into the barrier falling into a pond 30 or more feet below, as you surface a Prison Thug, Knocks you out and a guy name Deigo seems to command him to leave you alone.
And the game starts with your PC talking to Deigo. :)

That is basicly the Intro movie, late here so I will continue if your intrested about the basic story, if someone else doesn't, after some sleep. :)
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.

i've already met one guy (lester i think he was called) and said i didn't know him and he explained a little but not much. so far not finding the controls too bad - although i must have reloaded 10 or so times before i got the hang of fighting several goblins at once lol.

right, so basically your guy was imprisoned, ended up meeting one of the trapped mages and sorted out whatever caused the spell to go wrong or whatever and broke down the barrier? from reading the readme file for gothic 2 i know that now the prisoners have basically overun the country or whatever and effectively caused a civil war and that this big bad monster you killed in the first one has summoned dragons and other evil stuff just as it was defeated and now i have to go and sort it all out. from talking to the wizard guy i've also gathered he was kicked out of the mages cos he researched dark arts in order to help you defeat the monster or something like that. the only thing that really puzzles me, is where this monster fits into it all and what it actually was.

He wasn't kicked out he left in order to study the Dark Arts, because he knew the only way to understand what went wrong and there by possibly finding a soulution was learn about it, thou this is/was considered sacraligous.

The mystery of the Sleeper is part of your current game and the series, but lets just say there is more than one God in the game and not all support Life and Light. :)

I suggest you read any books you find, which continue the mystery.

As Xardas mentions in the very first conversation, when Bansihed the Sleeper called forth his Minions, so if the Sleeper caused the Barrier to distort maybe he was trying to keep the King from getting the, Ore. ;)
