is the gothic 2 expansion sold on its own or can you only get it in the gold edition combined pack?

Not in English, German yes.

You can try to sell/trade-in your Gothic2 for Gothic Gold.
Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.
