Ring of Protection early in game?

Post by George_K »

Early in the game, you're told that the first thing you should do is get the ring of protection before embarking on the other quests, but you can't do that until you get the password to enter the irynthabl maze and rescue the king's daughter.

By that time, it's near the end of the game and you've already been to the areas where the ring would have been useful. I don't suppose there's a routine in the main quests to get the ring of protection a lot sooner?

Not that I know of. Maybe you could find a place to climb the mountains to bypass the guardians and get to the maze. But really, wouldn't that ruin most of the game? I always felt they put the ring at the end because the other dungeons would have been way too easy with 100% protection in everything.

That's exactly my take on this. What's the point in playing if you are that godly? That ring is only available at that point exactly so that it doesn't diminish the difficulty level of the bulk of the game.

Plus if you climbed over the talking rock heads and got the ring it would bring about the end sequence and even though you could probably continue hunting relics the moon bridges would be turned off. D

I wonder if getting the ring would trigger the endgame sequence if you didn't have the other relics. Or would the game just go nuts since that shouldn't be possible?

I could be mistaken but I believe people have tried this and it does bring about the end sequence. D

True, True. What gets me is right off the bat you're told that you should strive to get the ring as early as possible. A terrible oversight in the game!

I think they meant it as a come on to get you going. It comes across as poor attempt to add depth and complexity to the game. In the end it confuses people when added with a log book short on detail and some boring dialog which you frequently can't hear so you have to read.
The story line goes something like this: as you are leaving Arindale and returning to Fargrove you are looking for Ellowyn and you are going after the relics. Ellowyn you are told has the one you should get first so, basically you are just looking for Ellowyn. But after you find Valdane the trail of Ellowyn has gone cold so you're left with the other relics which Staroxia has conveniently pointed you toward. Plus Vartagg has sent you off to the tomb of souls and when you’re finally able to wrap that up he sends you to Ellowyn. D

Yeh, and come to think of it, the Eye should be what you want first because that's what gets you to Irynthabl. And again, that comes much later also
