SR water jumping frustration
Does anyone have any helpful advice on how best to proceed through the water jumping puzzle room in the Shadow Ruins? I've read the walkthrough and followed their suggestion, but the shadow gate on the far side is always shut down by the time I get there. I'd prefer to do this without the use of a value-questionable crystal of time. Thanx.
I got this tip from someone else on this or another forum, but as soon as I enter the room I position myself right in front of the first platform and let it go down the first time. At about the point that it's about to rise out of the water, jump onto it than move to the corner closest to the next one and jump onto that one.
If you don't make it on time or fall in the water than go back through the shadow gate and come back in. That resets the platforms.
I hope that helps.

There are 2 reasons the shadow gate will close before you get to the other side assuming you are following the walkthrough and making your jumps. If you touch the water at all the gate closes. If you don't have the shadow stone in inventory the gate will close at about the third pillar.
I disagree that the value of using a crystal of time is questionable. It makes it easier to position your character and time your jumps but that’s just me. D

I used to make it across successfully about 75% of the time. I never use the time crystal. Make sure that you wait in the chamber outside for at least 20 seconds before making a new attempt of the gate won't reset and it will be impossible to complete the process. You really not possible to make it across successfully and not get through the gate in time if it is reset. Make sure to start your jump just as soon as the last pillar disappears in the water. Then 3 perfect corner-to-corner jumps and you'll do it. It took me about a hundred tries before I became good at doing this. Remember that the chess puzzle beyond is an amazingly good place to rack up experience. Just foul up the puzzle on purpose and pick up the soul stone over and over.

I personally find the Crystal of Time very helpful here. I make the jumps every time when using it, and miss 50% when I don't.
Frodo1 is right about the chess game being good for XP... on normal monster difficulty each Athena Chessman is worth 10200 XP... it takes about 30 seconds per "round" of
- mess up puzzle
- kill chessman
- pick up soul stone
- run back & reset puzzle
If you do the calculations, that's aobut 50 minutes for the 1.01 Million XP per level.. not bad.
I used the Kama of the Void to kill the chessman each time, about 5 - 7 hits in rapid succession. I suspect if I were able to use heavy weapons and wailed on them with either of the pro vs. stone weapons it would be even faster.

I do this on the difficult setting (over 12k each) and with good attack speed and a pro stone weapon only got hit about once every other athena. I never had to use a potion or healing spell and my best hour was about 2.8 million experience.
I still disagree about the crystal of time. But, maybe it does help other people. It just doesn't help me. Did you ever notice that if you use a time crystal and then reload your game while its effect is still active, that the sound effects for the main menu play in slow-motion, so to speak? Somewhat ridiculous, but, oh well.
