i too am currently exploring the halls of myth drannor. i have certain questions that i hope will aid me in my quest. i have currently explored what they have called the main halls and have noted stairways on my map provided to me by elminster. from there i have also explored large areas of the deep halls and a small area of the stone halls. in the process of this i have also noted several stairs to the hall of light, a lizard man tunnel, as well as a strange travelling device. but enough of my rambling, it is here that the problem arises. i seem to find no general path on where to go. do i seek to complete the halls of stone or the deep halls? oh if elmisnter were here i would give him an earfull.
ooc-so far i have had no trouble with the game my current adventurers are a 5th level human fighter (who also has cleave feat), a 5th level half-elf ranger, a 3rd level theif/2nd level fighter (halfling, a 5th level elven sorcerer, and juriel (the rock guy).
i would suggest blut weapons due to the amount of undead. my ranger is currenly wielding a mace and has not used his bow since the beginning of the game.
hail fellow adventurers......

I cant believe you dont have a CLERIC. Those undead are jokes if you had a cleric. The Orog are moderatly a pain, but hold person rocks too.
Healing is so very important. I am suprised. Also.. how come your dont have the NPC from the stone halls yet?

in my games (bg/icewind) i generally do not utilize clerics due to the availability of potions. right now my ranger is able to use scrolls and wands of clerical nature.
i think my main problem is that i do not know which direction to go. does one expore the deep halls or the halls of stone after the main halls. i have only picked through a little of each and have not found the npc in the hall of stone.

NPC is a 5th level fighter in halls of stone.
Go south-west.. to find him in general.
I found the deep halls are not full explorable as you need to go down several stairs. I think by completing the Main halls, I completed the deep halls because I went down explored the limited area you can and went back up.
Halls of stone was easier for a bit. A Cleric is superb with the turn undead. I WANT to fight undead, they do little or no damage and I get to sit there and send my troops into killing frozen undead. I am not sure you can handle the undead portal without some sort of turn undead spell. Those undead keep popping up and the frozen ones still take 3 hits to kill (1 round or so) and if they were alive it would almost be insane.
Btw, the halls of stone: Save all the iron axes you can find. There is a neat forge thing that will turn 3 iron axes into a nice +3 axe, and a forge to turn 3 iron shields into a nice shield as well.
I am starting to overflow with potions though. Early in the game, without turn undead working, I was using the potions. Now, I have a Paladin (lay on hands 10), fighter cleric dwarf (2 cure light), and a nice cleric with cure moderate wounds.
When you fight the orogs and they start healing thier own people (lizards do it to) it gets annoying. Always figure out where the spellcasters are and get in thier face, OR hit them with a melfs acid arrow.. it does continuos damage and prevents spellcasting. (web will too)

well i am not even up to the stone halls yet and all my chars even a dual classed rogue are level 6-7
Important point: unless you really need the npc dont bother getting him you will level your 4 main chars much faster by splitting the experience between just the main chars.
i suggest the cleric npc and thats it.

Strange, not in Halls of Stone and level 6-7? Well.. I did the same thing and mostly finished deep halls and halls of stone before I got my NPC's. It dont matter much, but I LOVE having emmeric. His double attack per round is SWEET.
Now my paladin has it.. and 2 more levels my cleric will have dual attack. 2 attacks w/ cleave makes emmeric superb.

With regard to the original question:
The flow of the game's entrances and exits indicates that they intended that one explore the upper halls first, perhaps all the way to the top of the tower there (room of words).
I did this and, having already explored most of the closed-off areas of the deep halls, found things to be very easy. You can explore all of the deep-hall entrance from the main halls early - they lead to isolated areas of the deep halls, and you'd just have to come back later anyway.
Conversely, exploring things back-asswards does means all the pre-set encounters are facing the wrong way with casters in the front. This is good impetus to explore haphazardly.
The only rule is: don't miss a room.

regarding what John Paul said about the experience....
the experience doesn't work the same way as does the BG or IWD series. u don't get a bigger share of experience using a smaller party. u actually get the same amount regardless of whether ur using 1 or 6 characters.
