Question about PoR

Post by Onyx »

Hi, i'm one of those players that's
not played PoR yet, but only BG.
And as a p&p roleplayer, i'd like
to try it.
Is this game any good, worth playing?
And how are the 3rd edition rules?

Study the 3. rules before making Char!
I have to figure out that my mage cant cast cause of carisma below 10!
After playing it 10 hours!
I have a lot of fun, but the game have certain weaknesses (is that right?), and some boring sections.
Install the patches 1.1 and 1.2!!
Go straight forward, dont try to figure out everthing directly. Some missions get solved by themselfs when u are step further in the game.
Important: Flag every (!) position u come across with unique names, keys, locked doors and so on. The dungeons are really huge, so u cant remember where something is and u have to come back often!
All in all im pleased with the game, could giving a lot of improvments in details, but...

if ur a hardcore dungeon crawler or hack-and-slasher then i suppose u can try it out. but if u don't really like those 2 kinds of games, i suggest u skip it. i had to play other games in between just to cut down on the monotonous and routinely gameplay. pretty boring sometimes. and there's not really much u can do with individual party members, considering none of them can move more than a dozen steps from the rest of the party, making scouts, backstabs, invisibility and surprise attacks impossible. and note: u can't surprise attack, u have to let the game decide if u've managed to surprise the enemy. cumbersome interface, totally limited selection of charater visuals and character development. not to mention dull background music, pointless money, and unnecessary or shallow dialogue. much more too, don't feel like typing anymore.

as for the patches, not too important, i'm halfway thru the game and still ok so far. just make sure u DON'T save (autosave included) while any of your characters are invisible or blinking. and keep backups of the save and roster folders somewhere else, so any save game crashes can be restored by overwriting with the backup.

but since i'm a hardcore Forgotten Realms fan, i'm sticking with the game to the end.

@Galen,Dark Ranger.
Well, i too am a hardcore Forgotten Realms fan, but from what you are saying, PoR does
not sound much fun. But with x-mas near, and have gone through BG too many times, i thing i'll give it a go.
Anyway, thanks you for your opinion,
and it's good to hear someone out there
say that there a hardcore Forgotten Realms fan.
So, do you do alot of p&p stuff?
Just asking.
:) :)

nah, not much p&p stuff anymore, hard to find frens who're still into this, growing up and all. as for the game... i really think it's terribly flawed but still playable overall. spell effects are cool and some of the background tiles look good. although there's the problem of the creatures not looking like their supposed to in the FR setting. still, being able to explore Myth Drannor kinda offsets everything ;) :p
