you need the stone mouth from ancient dwarven ruins (or whatever) to talk to the gargoyles

I had the same problem with the gargoyles at the bridge. I had to walk away from them then go back and try again to get them to let the bridge down for me.

I don't remember where the large metal key is, but the adamantine key is in the room it opens. You'll find a way into it in the next level I think.
