scarred elven key for catacombs, 2nd lvl?

I'm stuck. I seem to have cleared out the 1st level, the lower keep and most of the 2nd level. But there is a section in the 2nd level I can't access without a "scarred elven key." Where do I get this key?

the scarred elven key is carried by some orogs in a room on the second level, just west of the door that requires that key.

Hmm, I wonder how that might be since I've cleared everything in the area west of that door. No more orogs. (Of course, I'll have another likely fruitless look around.) I was wondering if it might be that room where opening the treasure chest triggers an orog attack (over and over), but there is no key to be gained from those battles.

did any orogs lose morale and flee the battle? sometimes the on with the key will do that.
