Is the game worth it?

Post by McBane »

I have 2 questions.

I bought the game over the weekend and it crashes almost immediately. I am pretty sure the problem is my video card. So, my questions are:

1. Is the game enjoyable/worth it?

2. What video card would everyone recommend?

I have lurked on the POR boards, and everyone just complains about the bugs, and it is hard to get a feel if people actually like the game itself.

I played through the first two levels of the game before I installed the 1.2 patch and started getting the fatal crash bugs. I believe the the ROMD engine has a lot of potential but suffers from poor execution and some (in my opinion) inexcusable design flaws. Unfortunately for UbiSoft, Bioware raised the bar on CRPGs with BG2 and ROMD dropped the ball. Once the bugs are eliminated, I would pay money for the game again, but not $44.99 or whatever full retail price EB and Babbages want; wait until it's in the $9.99 bin.

I have an ATI Rage Fury Pro in my computer and didn't have any compatibility problems with ROMD. I don't like Voodoo cards because they tend to run hot (heat being the enemy of component longevity). I have a couple of friends who have cards with the ATI Radeon chipset and they like them a lot. I've also heard good things about the nVidia TNT cards and the GeForce3 chipsets. Depending on your budget, there are lots of good video cards out there in the $100-150 range that will have 32 MB (or more) of memory and a video chipset that will meet 99% of your gaming needs. Shop around!

I don't know how I missed that thread. I am not overly critical about too many things in a game. I enjoy both dungeon crawl and rpg games. I also started on a C64 with the original POR, and have probably purchased most everything that has come out since....except Icewind Dale. I have not gotten around to buying that yet. Maybe I should have picked it up before POR2 :D

Thanks again for your thoughts

hmmm...i'm not very particular about the game not following the 3E DND rules, the bugs (haven't encountered any yet...thankful)..

overall the game is quite playable, but it depends on how much you expected it to be..

as for Video Card, TNT2 doesn't give me much problems
