Character Creation

Post by ginxian »

Can someone help me with character creation?
A fighter with 14 str, dex, con, int, wis and 8 cha ok? What's a good stat for paladin?
Sorcerer? The character creation system is a bit different from those in the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale series. Please help. Thanks. :-)

If I were building a fighter, I'd drop INT and CHA as low as you can get them and pump up STR, CON, DEX and set your WIS to 10 or 12. I haven't used any fighters; barbarians are much better HTH bricks (plus the cleave feat kicks butt!).

For a Paladin, you want medium/high in WIS (spells) and for CHA (turning undead). Plus you want the usual high STR, CON and DEX for your fighter attributes. Here's what I'd do, raise your WIS to 14, CHA to 12 and bump up STR, CON and DEX at the expense of INT. You will find some items in the game to help out your physical stats.

Sorcerers want at least a 16 in CHA (their prime attribute for spell casting), plus a high DEX to compensate for low HP. If anything, lower out INT (sounds funny when talking about a magic-user, I know) and pump up your other scores.

If there is one attribute which is the most "expendable", it's INT. Why? Because under the 3E rules, only rogues really need a high INT for their skills. WIS affects willpower saves, CON affects fortitude saves, and DEX affects reflex saves.

In ROMD, if you want to cast a spell, you have to have an attribute score (WIS for rangers, paladins, clerics; CHA for sorcers) of 10+ the spell level. For example, in order to cast Fireball (level 3), a sorcerer needs to have a CHA of 13. Rangers and paladins can cast up to 4th level spells, so they will want a WIS of at least 14. There are no ninth level spells, so don't bother raising any attribute to 19. Also, you will find several items which will raise your CHA and WIS, so your sorcerer and cleric can really get by with a score of 16.

Also, when raising/lowering attributes, you want to raise a score to an even number to get the bonus and lower it to an odd number to minimise the penalty.

Personally, I hate the points system. I like the random aspect of rolling dice (hence "rolling" up a character). The points system brings parity to individual characters, but in my opinion it ignores the elements of random chance in the gene pool for characters and player perseverence for gameplay.

As far as party creation, you do not want to start the game with out a cleric and a rogue. There are too many locked chests/doors and traps not to have a rogue. In the main halls (the first big dungeon), there are hordes of undead so you do not want to be without a cleric. Also, you will not encounter any monks NPCs who will join your party. So if you want a monk, you'll have to either roll him up to begin with or create a character you can multi-class out to a monk.
Jesus saves! And takes half damage!

If brute force doesn't work, you're not using enough.
