An Oblivion demo?

Post by adamousman999 »

For those of us seeking to find out how well Oblivion will play on our PCs... is there ever going to be a way for us to demo the game first before buying it?

No. The game mode of the elder scrolls series does not allow for a demo.

F.E.A.R. probably comes closest. Half Life 2 : Lost Coast might be comparable too.
Or run Doom 3 / Quake 4 / BF2 with 4xAA and 8xAF.

I don't think F.E.A.R. is a good choice of indication for Oblivion performance on a system. It could be valid for visual quality, but definitely not for performance.

F.E.A.R. runs smooth on my system with about 75% setting, i.e. Set it at 1024x768, Medium quality, and turn up to 4xAA and shadow a bit. So it actually runs smooth (with 50+ fps) on my system (A64 3000+, R9600XT 128MB, 768MB DDR 400) at medium+++ setting.

Oblivion can only run at "Acceptable" performance at low-- (used to be 640x480, but I turned off distant trees, some shadows and water/windows reflection in exchange for a little bit higher resolution (7xx by 5xx, can't remember well), and a little bit smoother trun) on my system.

The reason may due to FEAR is still a clustophobic game, most of the area are within small, enclosed area, and they need not to manage so many off screen props (enemies, background actors etc) compared to Oblivion. Plus FEAR do not offer as much veriaty of NPC models as Oblivion did.

From what I evaluate, if you can run FEAR at all high setting (even with softshadow on), you will be able to run Oblivion smooth and with good visual at medium+ setting.
