English Novels

Post by raygun81 »

I was wondering if there are any plans to translate The Witcher books into English. Apparantly they've been translated into just about every other language!
Cheers.

Hi,

It's Lukas from CD Projekt (developer of "The Witcher" game).

We have received information that Sapkowski's books are now being translated into English. We do not know much about the date of edition, however, it is said to be probably at the turn of the years 2006 and 2007.

There are books about the Witcher as well? I never knew there are books based on the Witcher. Well, um, are there any similarities between the books and the upcoming Witcher game?
''They say truth is the first casualty of war. But who defines what's true? Truth is just a matter of perspective. The duty of every soldier is to protect the innocent, and sometimes that means preserving the lie of good and evil, that war isn't just natural selection played out on a grand scale. The only truth I found is that the world we live in is a giant tinderbox. All it takes...is someone to light the match" - Captain Price

They refer to The Last Wish by A. Sapkowski and my undestanding is that Witcher is based on his books (apparently there are more than one since the guy has been writing for 15 years) and set in a world that he created. The Last Wish is the only one translated into English so far.
I would like to read something that was not written by Salvatore or Jordan for a change ;) if it were available on US market.

well, actually there are 7 books in polish: first 2 contain short stories, that are introduction to the saga about the witcher (5 other books). And there's one more book containing a few short stories, but only 2 are related to the saga

The only one I've found translated to English in the UK so far is The Last Wish which is a collection of short stories but is a good introduction to Gerhalt. I have mine on order.

I believe the Blood of Elves (first of The Saga) has also been translated although I haven't found it available anywhere in the UK as yet.

I spent the last couple of days reading The Last Wish - and I really enjoyed the book. Made me laugh more than once. Fairy tales retold, indeed.

A bit too much "fate" stuff though. Also, apparently, romance is not A.S.'s strongest suit: the whole Yennifer "la femme fatale" affair was tacky and utterly factitious. That explains why the "romance" in the game was so lame.

The Blood of Elves will be available in September.

Not Jordan or Salvatore? Try George R.R. Martin, those will keep you busy for a bit...the last book in his series isn't out yet though

The Last Wish, as mentioned, is available in English, and Blood of Elves. I got both in e-book format from ebooks.com. I don't think any of the rest have been translated yet, though I understand another is due this summer.
