Whoo! First post! A new forum to spread my inasanity and confusion! Good topic, RPG's.
Anyone care to list their favorites? Do you prefer the classics, or the new ones? I'm interested to find out.

"There CLUES"
"Ya ya, whatever. Geez, one letter off, so crucify me!"
Religious ones should get this, if you don't and want to, just ask.

Ok. I'm in(volved).
Of course current ones BGI & II
and I have to say Stronghold (1993) It is very unique.

Subtle and insubstantial, the expert leaves no trace; divinely mysterious, he is inaudible. Thus he is master of his enemy's fate.

Where to start?!
Arena the Elder Scrolls was good, nice spell customization. Daggerfall was a good idea but I could never play it more than partway through due to bugs.I liked Anvil of Dawn, Stoneprophet (better than Ravenloft), the Might & Magic series esp. Isles of Terra and World of Xeen.
Thunderscape was alright good variation in weapons and skills.I didn't like Arkania much a little too realistic..wearing out boots, broken weapons etc.
But my all time fave so far is a tie Icewind Dale and BG series. Sorry about the book

Personnaly, I like the Final Fantasy Series (except for 8. Big let down to me). Breath of Fire 1-3, Chrono Trigger, BG2, PL:T, V:tMR, The Quest for Glory series, the Legand of Zelda series (Ya, I count em as RPG's) Secret of Mana, Shining Force 2. Geez, the list goes on! Most of them were back in the days of the classic (days of the SNES) but, the classics will always be the best, no doubt.

Shining Force was one of the best Sega RPGs ever. Don't forget Phantasy Star. Lunar the Silver Star and Vay for sega cd were pretty good too
I hadn't even been thinking about console games, out of sight out of mind I guess.

I think Lunar(sorry last post had a typo)came out on PS recently. I had the sega console and one of my friends had the snes so I only played a few of the snes games. Chronotrigger was good but I had limited playing time with it

My poor old PS is collecting dust. This computer is taking more and more of my time.
As for CT I never finished it my self , other things got in the way(Marriage and Kids) I've decided to be there when my niece finishes it . I'm so glad she likes these type of games , my daughter doesn't.

"Vile and evil, yes. But, That's Weasel" From BS's book, MD 20/20: Fine Wines of Rocky Flop.
I have seen a lot of good RPG's posted by all of you, but I really do feel that you are leaving a game out of your listing.
My personal favorites would consist of the old AD&D games, but I would most surely include Darklands. I know that this game had its flaws and bugs, but it was truly an awesome game.
It is the first game that I played, where I was freely to roam around as much as I wanted. I also loved the character generation process that they used.

All Time favorite:
-Daggerfall (Despite the bugs, idiotic system requirements for its time and troublesome dungeon navigation).
Good second:
BG2.
The game I am waiting for in 2001:
-MorrowWinds (what else..)

"I asked Mom if I was a gifted child ...

I loved Daggerfall, because of the freedom in the game, and because of the way your skills only increased if you used them. You could only become a better thief, if you ran around and pick pockets and opened locks, and not by killing monsters. Ofcause it was bugged, but after some patches, it was playable.
Fallout 1+2 is also a favorite of mine, great gameplay/story.
Eye of the beholder also holds a place in my heart - one of my first RPG's.
And now BG1+BG2 ofcause - the best RPG in many years.

I'm looking forward to Morrowwind too. It's not going to be as random as the 1st two games so hopefully that means fewer bugs. Arcanum looks like it might be interesting too. Both are supposed to come with level editors so there should be plenty of things to do!

Favorite RPGs... tough decision--there have been so many.
Currently:
1. D&D 3rd Edition - a very nice release; great rules update, imo.
2. Baldur's Gate series ( I and II ); saved the PC RPG genre from complete extinction.
3. GURPS - 'Reign of Steel' campaign setting. Always fun to play the Terminator.

Oldie but goodie:Eye of the Beholder trilogy.Good AD&D but too many puzzles.Eye 2 is the best in my opinion.Amazing what they did in just a 2 MB game.
Next comes Raveloft series(+Menzoberranzan). Decent games but poor graphics.I liked the Egyptian-style scenery in Stone Prophet, but Strahd's Possesion was better overall.
From recent games Planescape:Torment was excellent.Great story, graphics, unique scenery and hero.A must have,in my opinion.
From non AD&D games,I choose Betrayal at Krondor.Great RPG.Huge world, interesting plot, good gameplay but very poor graphics.
