I was just thinking about a different way to do character generation that I haven't seen. I have seen stuff close, but never actually work out this way. I think it addresses a couple of the problems I have with current methods.
Issues:
1 - I like making my entire party. I like having that level of control and BG I&II has greatly annoyed me by forcing me to have those NPC's in order to do some quests.
2 - Icewind Dale was nice, party creation and all, but I do like side questions for characters, I just would rather make them myself.
So to address these two problems I was thinking of something long the lines of the following. If the game designer took out the NPC themselves and provided a nice write-up about some general history for a character. Race restrictions on the history perhaps, but provide the basic infrastructure to have side quests and interesting story lines based on a particular background chosen for a character at it's creation. They could do perhaps 20 different background, perhaps vaguely associated with a particular class or race, or maybe with none of those restrictions.
It would allow for lots of replayability, and would address my two problems with the current way of doing things. It would be neat because when you are creating your characters you can choose a more developed background for them, a background that begins to make sense for why they would be in the city in the first place.
Anyway, I guess I pose this to you all as a thread to start thinking about how to make the game better and perhaps game designers might see this and pick up on it.
