Well if I was him I wouldn't take the febreeze (sp) just to make sure I could do jobs like that. But admittedly he may be more altruistic than me. ;)

 :D
Actually they think I'm crazier for just reading the stuff at all. They keep commenting that they can't even pronounce 'Michel de Montaigne' correctly... To which I always reply "That's because it's french" which always draws the retort "Well the French suck anyways" from my dad.  .

 No thawing of relations with the French over there, then?

Actually, is there real animosity to the French in America? Or is it just media stuff?

Not amongst the Republicans at least.

Well not actual animosity I'm sure but... Pretty much that Frenchman in Monty Python and the Holy Grail sums it up well: annoying accent, goofy mustache, arrogant... Vaguely effeminate (sp?). That kind of stuff. It's just silly mostly but I know Dennis Miller and I aren't the only ones referring to them as the "Frogs". Of course I don't really have any reason to dislike them other than that I don't like how they're language sounds (I took french for a few years and could never get the nasaly stuff down).

It is funny. I think the language is beautiful to listen to, though I cannot speak it at all. But I am quite irrationally francophile: I would live there if I could. :)

See I thought so too until I took classes in middle and high school and realized I couldn't speak it worth a damn. The actual makeup of the classes are probably to blame along with my own ineptitude, but I just dislike the language. I also don't ever want to go there simply because of how rude I've heard the people are. I have two friends and a set of grandparents who have been there and say the people are just rude beyond belief, so it just enhances the stereotype. I have seen pictures of the Riviera and it does look beautiful but there are other places I'd rather go I guess. *shrug*

I suppose that makes me irrationally Francophobic. ;)

Oh but it isn't true, Tony. They are really helpful. At least they always have been to me. I did get a row once because the courtesies are really important to them and we are very rude in some ways. A combination of doing things differently (and worse IMO in this country) and missing out the basic politenesses because I was concentrating too hard on getting the essentials across (what can I say - brits don't have the genes to learn languages or something). It is a shame that folk always say they are rude, I think :(

I'm sure many are and I'm sure many aren't. I'm very glad you had a good experience and it's entirely possible the people I know were treated poorly may have been due in no small part to the fact that they may not have been terribly familiar with their customs (I can tell you Americans are especially thickheaded about such things, trust me on that). It is a shame I suppose. *shrug* But then again I know not all Scots wear kilts so... :D
