Does anyone use torches?
I've read a couple threads about enchanting items to illuminate dark places and such. I'm still using torches to light the way.
1) Do torches become obsolete by better stuff later on?
2) Why NOT continue to use torches anyway? They're cheap and plentiful.

I am the Lord of the Waste Land; A modern day 'Man of Steel'. I gather darkness to please me

I'm in that group as well. I have no need for torches, Light, or night-eye whatsoever due to my set-up. I just never use them because I see perfectly fine without them. I tried once, just to see how it is, and I did use that mod to keep them burning after you drop them, so I could light up my fireplace but that's it.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

I use them occasionaly, however my thief finds it hard to sneak past a gaggle of trolls to the sparkly chest across the cavern with a huge flaming stick in my hand... normally I clear a dungeon, then either run back through with a torch, or cast weak spells to briefly illuminate the area (not light or night eye just a quick healing spell gives me all the light I need).
If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him.

I usually use a huge-radius, long lasting light spell I made at AU when I'm poking around a dark cave or dungeon, but occasionally I'll use a torch instead because I like the colour of light and the atmosphere it gives better than the washed-out green glow of the light spell. And as for night-eye, while it makes it easier to see stuff, the monochrome seems such a waste of the beautiful underground environment graphics.

i never used torches when i played on my laptop...the screen was bright on default brightness settings...now on my new rig the lcd is a bit darker so i use torches alot..makes sense the way they play out....but i have this nifty little follower who loves me because im the arena grand champion now...when we go dark places he holds a torch out for me...saves alot of time and continues the realism...until he gets smashed by a minotaur lord because he is just a kid....LOL
I hope they mod Oblivion so it will be possible to have actual night like they did in a Morrowind mod. It was nice to actually *need* light after the sun was out, or in caves.
Yup, it can and I've seen at least one mod for Oblivion.

And torches are for loosers right?
Personally, I miss the Morrowind lanterns. Especially the Asian-ish paper lanterns were nice.

I'm a heavy torch user Have it mapped to my 1 hotkey, just whip it out when necessary. I'm not running any mods and definately need to use torches in dungeons etc. I will be downloading some type of darker nights mod as it's too much like twilight all the time.
I mainly use them for RP and atmospheric reasons.

I use them early in the game. Yes, they are cheap and plentiful - and they don't weigh anything, and they last a decent length of time (which spells don't).
BUT, a torch has two main disadvantages:
1. You can't use a shield in the dark (as someone else pointed out) because you are holding a torch.
2. Holding a torch makes you more likely to be noticed, even if you are in Sneak mode and good at it.
So, using a spell like Nighteye gives you hands free for a shield. And the light is for you alone. No-one else can see it, so you are not a brightly-lit target.
Using a light spell of any sort is almost as bad as using a torch though, since others can see the illumination too (at least, I think they can).
Casting Light on your target should be good, I think, though I haven't tried that yet.

I'm using the Darker Nights & Dungeons mods, so without a torch or another source of light I can't see farther than two feet. My battlemage uses a torch, but when things become too dangerous he pulls out his shield and uses a light spell. I also have a more thief-like character who uses Nighteye to move around unseen.
The light spell is too greenish and NE to blueish, so whenever I can I stick to a torch because it creates a much better atmosphere.
