Over encumbered - dropping things

It happened to me a couple of times that when I pick up an item which is too heavy for me (and am over-encumbered) I cannot move. I try to lay down items but am not able to. Although I can leave things behind when I find a chest, crate or body.

Can I lay down & position / drop items? How does this work?

Shift left click on the item you want to drop.

hold down shift when clicking on an item in your inventory to drop it. Works a lot better than the instinctive drag and drop method

You might also want to invest in a Feather spell, for just these occasions.
