Help me! *possible spolers*

Post by Eadaii »

I play a theif, and I like to complete the thief stronghold quest early on in the game, because, well, mainly because I want Edwin in my party for as much time as possible.

However, since I haven't leveled that much yet, I find the battle with the mage Edwin wants you to kill VERY HARD. The battle with Mae'var is easy, but not so with the mage, due to his spells. I find that most of the time I have to leave my other companions outside, because they die almost easily. And I die half the time, anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to beat him?

The cowled wizard had some spells like Powerword Stun, Finger of Death and Cone of Cold from my memory and that amounts to a pain in the can. The easiest way I've found it firing off a fireball in his direction early will hurt him *really* damage, two should kill him.

Bring a cleric, druid and atleast a bard in terms of arcane spellcasting.

Summon a skeleton (low level doesn't matter) and an animal. Get the bard to sing a song.

Then get the druid to cast detect invisibility, cleric cast remove fear and the bard cast haste.

Remove magic, glidderdust, spook, greater malison and breach as well as secret word will help you against him you just have to time it right.

I went against him with a low level cleric and druid combo with a wizard slayer to kill his summons and it was doable.

I was wondering the same thing. If you initiate the backstab while he is blue but have it hit after he turns red (i.e. after the conversation) that should stop him from being able to cast any spells.

Your party can then just pound him to death.
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.

Better yet, go to the bookseller in Ribalds shop and buy two scrolls - Spook and Symbol of Death then use them in that order and pray that it works.

just talk to him but stop
then have your thief backstab him
after backstabd talk to him again
then backstab again
i think 2 backstabd would be enough too kill him ;)

I did not think that multiple "fake talks" would work, especially with backstabbing. Thanks for passing that along! :)

I'm pretty sure he spawns with a stoneskin by the time a party can reach him, using cheese tactics should never really be used on someone as simple as a single mage.

I remember getting screwed over by him a few times in my solo games but I ended up using a wand of fireball from the same room to blow him up.

How difficult can this guy possibly be ? A single medium level mage with no summons at hand and only two items that aren't overpowered ?

Thief - potion of invisibility (before you enter room) then go to him and give him a backstab then he initiates dialogue then just talk to him and backstab him again.

Maybe if you did some menial quests - killing unattached enemies such as those 4 in the bridge district, or those 6 in the sewers in the Temple district may help.
