am I really screwed now,or is there a way to get to the next level after a mishap with carston and the machine.

He says "time itself can't touch me " ,he said " I'm super-invincible " , " impervious to harm " but haer dalis' shortsword snatched the life right outta him. What gives?

I doubt that this matters, as long as you have the instructions for opening the portal to the next level. At the moment, I don't remember where you get them (maybe from him), but try using the instructions below, on the machine, to open the portal.

Have you loaded up another map since you killed him? If not, then you could reload your auto-save, and it will never have happened...

But like Sparrow said, you don't need him to get the instructions to get to next level (Normally he gives them to you if he lives...but I'm not too sure what happens if you kill him). :?

Basically, you can't really screw up the game progress by killing people. Even if you try, they run away or something before they die. The only thing that might happen would be an actual game bug, save reloads for that.

If you kill him you can get his journal, which describes the way to open the next portal.

haerdalis' sword is one of these bugs though. It drains Dex, which is one of the few things you cannot be immune against. You can kill that Shadow Thief assassin with it for instance.
