fair enough, shags, but let me tell you that alch is pretty beans as far as skills go. there are endlessly available potions you get in the game, and even if you need to buy them... well, lets put it this way, i have a quarter of a billion septims in my save file, buying potions is not a big deal for me. won't be for you either.

so if you LIKE sitting there and finding ingredients and mixing them in a bottle, go for it... but otherwise, there's no real use for alchemy since you can buy or have them made for you just as easily. second, run your character through a couple levels and don't be afraid to go back and start over a couple times with a new build. I restarted five times to finally find a character i liked... which was something along the lines of a kahjit theif/assasin with a shortsword (well, okay, only a shortsword to start the game, then i graduated him to every weapon you can get). lets see, i focused on acrobatics, block (not that useful till later), light armor (bad choice, should have gone w/ med if i wanted to max out), security, short blade (again, should have gone with something that enhanced strength... oh well).

You can make far better potions (for example, strength potions that add 40 strength for over 2 minutes with no negative side effects) and potions that do several things (like speed enhancing potions of levitation or health restoring fire shield potions) at once by using alchemy. Plus, from a role-playing perspective, it can make sense for certain types of characters to use alchemy. There are so many possibilities for the type of character you can play, that which skills someone chooses are pretty much up to them to suit the kind of character they want to play.

It's just that you've never tried to explore the potential of alchemy. Potions are not just made to drink, you know.

alchemy is most important for a low level character. the quickest way to level is to train.....you need money to train.....some potions are worth more than there ingredients...buy, make, sell, train. rinse and repeat.

Perhaps, but once your intelligence and alchemy are at a decent level, and you have at least a Master's alchemy set (easy to find), home-brewed alchemy potions are *greatly* superior to any you can buy.

You can also make potions that combine effects. For example:
*fortify attack and fortify strength
*fortify/restore magicka and restore/fortify health
*fortify luck along with any of the combat-oriented potions.

Here is a thread that details some of the various potions recipes that are possible:
