Oblivion... Worth $460???

I'm not much of a gamer any more, but I have to give Oblivion a shot. I would need to buy an XBox 360 just to play it. Buying a computer is out of the question. I will probably buy Madden and a few other games, but not too much of a significant. Is Oblivion really worth that much?

Ugh that's a tough question. Buying a 360 for Oblivion ... in all honesty I don't think 360 is worth any game. But I am biased towards Billy so don't listen to me.

Yeah that is a toughie
Buying an entire console just for one game is a dicey proposition IMO.
But the 360 is a great product, despite my esteemed colleague Ashen's opinion.
Don't buy it just for Oblivion though, if you only want it for that, you might be kicking yourself 120 hours later. I mean it depends what kind of gamer you are. Play obsessively or every once in a while? Into lot's of different types of games or just rpg's? Do you have a family? etc.
At the very least, do some research on it.

I mean, I love my 360. A whole lot. My girlfriend gets jealous.

O how I wish I was kidding.

N-no, just no. Straight up, oblivion isn't even worth the 50 that they sell it for, I don't like the game that much at all. but that may just be me. The several glitches, the radiant AI quirks, the fact that you can beat the game at an extremely low level, all that stuff makes this game really not that much worth it.

ok im a Elder scroll fan ... played all parts and couldent say no to this

imo 360 is a joke get a comp and then have a thrill

spend 5 times as much on a comp that you'll use for oblivion and maybe your word processing, or spend 400 bucks on a console

I did bought a 360 to play the game, and I'm not kicking my self to bad.

May I ask, (I'm assuming you have a computer, since your posting here) what are your system specs? It may be cheaper just to upgrade, and mods can make this game MUCH better. And, if you like to play with a controller (I do, so sue me!!!), you can plug a 360 controller right into the front of your computer and play. Im currently playing Morrowind that way.

@ Syb: Now, I wouldnt exactly be that extreme. It's not as good as Morrowind, but its still is a great game.

Interesting topic. Being a PC gamer prior to becoming a Console gamer, let me give you my two cents.

I used to exclusively play the PC versions of games. Why? Historically, prior to Next Generation consoles, the PC versions of the games simply looked and performed better. One of the drawbacks, in my oppinion, to playing PC games was that I felt that I needed to keep sinking more and more cash into my PC to keep up with the latest games. I typically play competitively online so in the instance of these types of games: However has the fastest PC and the fastest connection ussually wins --if not has a significant advantage. I eventually got tired of that and started playing console games which leveled the hardware playing field with a standardized system. With the advent of Next Generation Consoles, the difference between PC games and Console games is becoming less and less discernable.

In the instance of Oblivion, you have 1 of 2 choices. A: Buy a new/or upgrade to a high end PC for several hundred or even several thousands of dollars. OR B: Buy a 360 for 400 bucks. One thing that was a clincher for me was reading the reviews for the PC version and reading the reviews for the 360 version. The reviews for the 360 version were higher than that of the PC version. I also checked out the Screenshot Comparison that Gamespot put out. The 360 version beat out the PC version in all of the categories except for the very high end PC Category in terms of image quality, viewable distance etc.

So for me it was a no brainer. I could get a decent version of the game, rated higher than the PC version at a cheaper price. --Now, playing devil's advocate, I do not have as much of an access to mods and downloadable content as the PC community. (which would be cool, granted that the mods didnt throw off the balance of the game which some of them do) Dont get me wrong the 360 version does have some downloadable content available but obviously not the level of user/fan based content that the PC version has.

Having played both sides of the fence, I tend to lean towards the 360 version in terms of affordability which was the basis of your initial question.

That's the drawback of buying a 360 version.
I'm in the same boat as raven, but with Xbox Live (and later the other companies' online services) consoles are now just all around better.
Everyone's got a level playing field, you're a LOT less prone to crashes and such, and it costs a fraction of a high end PC for the same if not greater graphics processing and computing power.
The drawback is of course the level of customization. Currently the only available downloads are Bethsofts, which frighteningly may remain the case.
It's true that Microsoft spoke of that degree of user created content, but so early in the system's life that might not yet be a possiblility. Think of the hurdles that must be cleared, since the game isn't actually installed onto the 360's hard drive, the modification must be made after the fact, like a module the game implements after it has loaded, something more akin to emulation than modification.

I do only play every once in a while, but college is just down the road for me. That is when I will probably be using it a little more. On the other hand, a computer would be much more valuble for internet reasons and whatnot. I'm thinking 360 because it's cheaper and I have two little brothers who play non-stop. I could make them chip in a hundred or two, and then I will be good to go. Please, though, more opinions would be great.

Buying xbox for jsut 1 game is a bad idea, espeicalyl if your an rpg fan(ps2 or whatnot is much better in that case, or a pc) and not a big fan of sports/shooters or games that are generally more eye-candy then anything. You might look into the type of xbox games that are availble to you, if they suit your taste, then you'd be buying the xbox on a premise of playing otehr things besides oblivion.(i think you know what i meanXP)

Sadly ALOT of game developers are starting to stick stuff on xbox...which really sucks when like me i dont like sports or shooters. A game i had been waiting for for a long time was quite obviously primarly made for xbox, and now i'm scared ti buy it for pc on account of how bad the controls for pc are said to be. ;-;

I mean sure...yay!(*slight sarcasm*) the companys of dieing pc genres will be raking in new cash....but its depressing to see these companys practically shunning those of us that have kept them in bussiness and bene loyal fans so long. I mean ps2 would have been a better choise for both gamer types at LEAST. Or would it have been so hard for the company to tweak the controls so they'd be playable on a pc...when its a pc gaming company? >.> *rants*

But um anyway...on a side note, depending onw ho much a 360 costs. Upgrading your comp might not be to bad. only thing you'll have to worry about is the graphics card really, just check around for which work and which dont. some cheaper ones will work with the game if i'm correct the games jsut well horribly picky about brands. and bit more ram proably wouldnt be to expensive either.(depending of courseXB)

I agree with most of you on most of the counts. Purchasing a 360, or a PC for that matter, for just one game probably doesnt make good financial sense. But you have to keep in mind that whether you go the PC route or the 360 route (eff it buy both

) your not just going to use that PC or 360 JUST for Oblivion. There are alot of other games in development as we speak and games that will get developed in the future that your going to want to pick up for both platforms I'm sure.

I do play many different games, I just don't play often. I'm a baseball player, so that takes a lot of my time and over the summer, I am lifeguarding, so I'll be at the beach. I will probably get a 360 with some of that job money, so it might take a while. (A week and a half or so) I'll probably get a computer for a graduation gift, so I should be alright. It looks like I will probably get Oblivion, just because I had Morrowind on XBox.

I know where your coming from, my games have been collecting dust for about a year now. But because I was a Morrowind fan and it looks like you are or were one too I decided to buy it. My old computer had trouble playing Morrowind so I new I needed a new one or a 360. Money was short and I was either at work or at school most of the time, but then one night on Dell.com a bought a new XPS. It was an in pulse buy but one of the best I ever made. Now I play and I have a computer to do school work on.
