Adalon's Lair

How do you get to Adalon's lair? I just received the light gem from the Gnome King after killing the Balor. I proceeded to the cavern, but I am unable to go down the steps despite my main character having the light gem. Any thoughts on how I can get into Adalon's lair and therefore proceed to the Drow City?

While I'm here though, the path to Adalon's lair is near the entrance to the drow city. As you walk towards the main entrance to the city, the path should fork. Take the left hand path and it will lead to stairs to Adalon.
