I don't mind them....problem is this. Most "horror" movies, are stupid characters running into corners when being hunted by something trying to kill them. Negating the emotion of "scary" and replacing it with disgust and irritation upon viewing such idiocy on screen.
"You can do whatever you want to me."
"Oh, so I can crate you and hide you in the warehouse at the end of Raiders?"
"So funny, kiss me funny boy!" / *Sprays mace* " I know, I know, bad for the ozone"

I tend to prefer well crafted psychological thrillers over horror movies.

All those gory, slasher films are kinda redundant and stupid. Nothing scary about them.

I've never been a fan of horror flicks. They just aren't scary.

*Nods* Although, I have to say, watching the beginning to Saw 2 while hallucinating was frightening beyond belief. The only time I've ever been completely grossed out and horrified during a movie. Probably wouldn't have been so bad if I was sober to begin with though.

I know I'm white myself, but has anybody noticed that in ANY horror movie, it's always the White Chick who hears a sound in her basement or somewhere "mysterious" in her house (even though she's been living there for a while) and she has to investigate by first saying "Hello?"

I never understood this concept, if I'm fearing something, then why would I give it a friendly invite such as hello?

Though, I'd LOVE to see a Horror Movie where the main character is a weed smoking hippie who hears a sound then somehow talks to a dog coherently and gets him to help set up the most farfetched trap you've ever heard of using only a curtain, a paper clip, and a bucket. :D :D

Not for the scare factor, but just for the quality of the movies, I like the following:

Stir of Echoes; ... 28 Days Later; Dawn of the Dead (the new one); Evil Dead series; The Grudge... I think that's about it.

I think I would enjoy horror movies if there was any scare-factor in them, but I am yet to see a horror movie which has been anything but boring. Like you say, "scary" just equals disgusting, irritation or cheap surprise factors. Rubber dolls covered with green slime is not my idea of scary.

The Ring scared me, as did Stigmata, Stir of Echoes; there's a few I know I'm missing but can't remember.

But those weren't really movies with any 'cheap surprise factors'.

I find "scary" movies fun, because most of them are so ridiculous that they are involentary funny.
Thus you'll often find me laughing at so called scary and horror movies because I find them stupid :D

Heard an amercian standup comedian one day express his opinion about such movies.
He felt the people portraied in such movies were so stupid they could be stangled by a cordless phone..... that sums up my opinion very well :D

Not the outright slasher movies or such, but more the thrillerlike movies with a strong touch of the supernatural (of fairly recent movies, "Skeleton Key" would be a good example), or scifi horror à la Alien (but rather the first were it is not immediately clear who or what the enemy is).

Other examples (first out of my head): "The Serpent and the Rainbow", "Angel Heart" and to a certain extent "The Devil's Advocate", and for sci-fi e.g. "The thing".

In general that genre works better in writing though, or maybe it's just that there are more and better stories than movies in that genre.

The best ones play on fear (especially of the unknown) and alienation not on shock & revulsion.

I agree alien and the thing were awesome movies.....course I didnt know anyone else here saw that movie :D

@Mag, yeah there are too many movies that are way to gory...and not enough fear or scary....the only thing scare is the background music they give it to scare you but even thats gotten predictable....although the first time I saw the ring I did get freaked out a bit.......too bad theres not that many movies like that.....event horizon was a bit scary and gory......then again theres a difference between scary and demonic
Wondering how vampires live the life they live.....
seriously I dont know how they sleep during the day, I have a twitch everytime I hear a loud sound as I slumber, everytime ....Im just waiting to pounce on the poor mortal who creates a sound while I sleep in during the day. /rant

My mom loves horror movies, but she's into the classics. Her favorite actor is Vincent Price, who starred in a thousand cheesy horror movies. That's the kind of thing she's into. I've watched some of them with her, and they're so low-tech (it's like the 50's, so c'mon) that it's just hilarious to watch. This one movie she and my dad used to make fun of was called The Tingler; it was very big when it came out in theaters years ago. Anyway, I finally saw it, and it was so ridiculous. I find all those old horror flicks very funny; she does, too, but I think when she was younger it had more of an impact.

You mean The Thing with Kurt Russell? That movie was seriously disturbing, and I'm glad that I don't remember it very well.

I didn't like the second half of Being John Malkovich because it ended up being a creepy parasite/vampire-type movie, which is the same thing that made The Thing so disturbing.

Although it wasn't intended to be a horror movie per se, the new movie Flight 93 might be right up your alley, based on what I've read about it. I'd like to know if anyone here has seen it and whether they think it is a "scary movie".

Rules of Surviving A Horror film-Type Situation:
  1. Don't Have Sex
  2. Don't Say "I'll Be Right Back" Because You Won't
  3. The Annoying Ones Die First
  4. The Killer Is Always The Last Person You'd Expect. So Expect Everyone
  5. Don't Walk Into A Seemingly Epmty Room And Say "Hello". You May Aswell Have A Neon Sign Saying "Kill Me Now"
She's got a smile that, it seems to me, reminds me of childhood memories, where everything is as fresh as the bright blue sky.
