I installed Oblivion yesterday and have had nothing but problems with it.
It loads up to the menu alright, then I attempt to start a new game, which starts the video, whic is pretty poor quality on my system (it seems to split it up into 'tiles' (e.g. video starts, some parts of it keep moving along slowly, other bits of it will freeze right from the start) - despite te annoyance of that, I can cope, so either I wait until the end of it or try to bypass by pressing Space or Escape...and in any case after the video is over, the game crashes to the desktop.
My system is low spec when related to Oblivion - 2GHz CPU, Nvidia FX5700 (Golden Sample), 1.5GB RAM...so the game recommended setting everything to the effective minimum, which I did, to the same effect.
I also ensured the anti-aliasing and other graphics card setting were set to application-controlled.
So, I was wondering if anyone had any advice or knew whether tere are any bugs with FX5700's, etc.
I downloaded the patch, which I haven't had a chance to try as yet, so there is a chance that could solve the problem, of course...
Thanks in advance.
Graphics Problems?
I seem to remember a problem with the FX series. Despite being "supported".
Regardless you might want to try "oldblivion"; a mod which replaces many of the shaders and higher graphical features of Oblivion.
Looking at the site, it is geared towards FX5700. More info here.

Yeah, the patch will help. Install it and choose the "Very Low" setting, and it should fix it. It'll still be a bit slow, just a bit, during like outside of any building and someone casts a spell, it might slow it down for a few, but otherwise, that's what ya need.

I'm not an expert at this stuff but I'd make sure your graphics drivers are fully updated, and then just try with the patch.

Okay, I tried installing the official (v1.1) patch for Oblivion to no success (screenshot included of the error I received), though the patch did seem to install without problems other than that, the game behaved in exactly the same fashion as before.
I haven't tried the Oldblivion thing or graphics driver updates yet as those are riskier propositions and I was hoping the official patch would work.
I might also uninstall and reinstall Oblivion but I'm not holding out too much hope at the moment.
One thing, I forgot to mention earlier, if I try to change any of the graphical settings in-game (from the main menu), the game crashes to the desktop as soon as it applies them. And that is for all settings including Brightness (though I think it applied it and then crashed. )
