Druid levelling sucks?

Post by Hannigaholic »

I recently reinstalled SoA and ToB, patched it all up and started again (I never did finish it before, I got pretty far but then reinstalled and forgot to backup my save games...)

I started out as a Shapeshifter Druid, all was well, I was levelling pretty quick, even with my 6-man group (currently Me, Minsc, Valygar, Jaheira, Aerie and Nalia). I get my -6 AC with Draw Upon Holy Might and +4 to hit/+10 to dmg. All seemed well

I've hit level 12 and I noticed that I need 750,000XP to hit lvl 13, I'm only on 370,000 now. I'm aware that levels rise exponentially but I never even hit half of the 750k I need - am I going to fall behind the rest of my party as the game progresses? the only benefit I feel I've got from levelling is more spells, that I don't use because I'm a werewolf all the time. I kinda feel like I'm not going to get any better since equipping weapons/armour makes no difference to me when shapeshifted

I'm not really trying to make the perfect party at all, as long as I can get by I don't mind (though it's a shame I have nobody who really wants to use 2h swords - they all have Two Weapon Style **, I'm tempted to restart with a 2h Kensai now...)

At level 13 you will be able to shape shift into a Greater Werewolf. Once you are able to do that you will be pretty unstoppable.

Being a werewolf until then you shouldn't have much of a problem until you get there. Most druids are at level 14 before they get to Trademeet. Do you have any outstanding quests left to do?

You could also download ShadowKeeper and edit Minsc to move his proficiences to 2-Handed Sword and 2-Handed Weapon style if it is bothering you.

After all, if you aren't enjoying the game then it isn't any fun to play. :)

Oh well if I get Greater Werewolf at lvl 13 that's good enough for me :)

and yeah I still have Windspear Hills, Trademeet and pretty much every quest within Athkatla's walls to do yet

You should be okay then but since you are a druid, save Trademeet for last. ;)

Despite being a stoic druid defender, I recommend against playing as a druid in BG2.

TOB or with Ease of Use mod then go right ahead as either of which make the druid classes unstoppable.

The Shapeshifter is underpowered but given the power of your party you should be able to complete the game. Still in comparison to the other characters that can be chosen the druid in BG2 isn't as powerful when compared to the other classes concerning their levels.

underpowered you say? so far I feel quite the opposite

from lvl 8 I could get -6 AC and +4 to hit, I die less than Minsc or Valygar so far and with Greater Werewolf around the corner I can only see that improving

Having said that Druid in NWN was a lot stronger than in BG (those nice 3.0 druids with their pet and animal summons made that game a lot easier with a druid - it was like having a proper party again :) )

There's an earlier thread which I stated the details of the Shapeshifter to what was offered as to what as supposed to be gained.

Page 3 of the 'Ultimate Cheese Character' thread half-way down the page.

Frankly, yes, the jumps from 12 to 13, 13 to 14, and 14 to 15 are really big. However, there is no other class where you can reach level 12 with only 375K-odd XP!

I've often dualled a druid over to fighter at level 12 specifically for this - by the way, level 13 for a fighter takes around 1.5 million XP, if I recall correctly, so it could be much worse!

Sorry to bump this thread but my query was related. I wanted to play a shapeshifter PC through SoA and ToB but I’m a little concerned with the greater werewolf form being underpowered, specifically the claws only counting as a +2 weapon. That won’t hit anything end game! The EoU mod address’s this issue but its looks like common opinion is that this makes the class overpowered. I’m now not sure if it’s worth investing the time with this class only to be disappointed. Thoughts?
My torment is that there is no sequel to Torment! :(

Both were posts that you should have read before posting - Ease of Use mod is around here somewhere - probably in one of the sticky threads.
