Heh.

Alright I'll correct myself:

Does anyone know if there is a way to get to level 255 wihout having to go to jail, prison, or being thrown in a dungeon?

I don't know if you can get that high in level, but there's a trick you can use to get higher than normal. You just train one attribute (by using skills governed by it to level up) and don't pick it. Take all the +1s when you level up. The game would get hard fast, but it would let you level up more.

P.S. What makes you ask?

Yep. The max is 255.

Just wondering if there is another way besides going to jail. The only way to lower your skills at a decent pace is to kill a lot of townspeople, etc. but that gains you infamy and let's just say I don't role that way. I can keep stealing stuff valued at 0 or other menial crimes that don't give me infamy, but it takes forever.

255? Dang, I thought it was only 50. I'm only 15 now and I'm not gonna make to 50 so 255 is out of the question. Where did you hear that the highest level was 255?

Highest number that can be represented in a single unsigned byte. I don't know where they heard it either, but its a reasonable boundary for the purposes of marshalling and data packing.

According to gamefaqs, on the PC version you can put this into the console:
player.setlevel 1
Changes player level to desired number. Use 1-255.

However I'm playing on the 360, and even if I was playing it on the PC, I wouldn't do it anyway.

I dunno. I think the limit might be higher than 255, because it was higher in Morrowind. My (legitimate) Morrowind character is level 310 and I haven't hit the cap yet. It could be 500 or 999, not 255.

I don't think there was a cap in Morrowind. Last time I checked I was 1056.
