ironman anyone?
ironman anyone?
has anyone in here done the ironman? that is playing through the game without loading, die and you have to start the whole game over.
just curious.
just curious.
*** Bg1 Spoliers ***
I played the whole Saga once, as a Cleric (Priest of Lathander in BG2).
I had Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, and Dynahier in BG1.
I had Jaheira, Minsc, Keldorn, Yoshimo/Imoen, and Aerie/ToB Dude in BG2.
My ironman game started great in BG1. Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5: no death. Then, before initiating Chapter 6 (Candlekeep), I visited Ulgoth's Beard...
I died and re-loaded in the following areas:
The first encounter in the Ice Cave, when transported there from Ulgoth's Beard.
Durlat's Tower (several areas)
The Demon in Ulgoth's Beard (multiple times)
The final confrontation with Sarevok
Of course, each time I re-loaded and continued on, but without the iron-man noteriety.
I did NOT use cheesy game engine exploits or walkthroughs.
(Okay, maybe one: I always make sure my dudes get max HP).
And, throughout the entire Saga, I rested only once a day. This added a tactical complexity, and helps maintain a realistic feel (important to a game based on Dungeons & Dragons *wink*).
Without cheese, I could NOT imagine going thru BG2/ToB without ever dying.
But I would always try, or at least keep the number of deaths to a minimal amount. It keeps things tense, even when you know what's around the corner in the game.

Why is it that whenever I finally get around to playing a new game for the first time,
I feel like playing Baldur's Gate for the second time...

Two did an excellent write up on his adventures through BG2 and TOB doing exactly that with a bard :speech: Quite a good read.

I killed a rabid rabbit! I'm experienced now!
hmm. interesting. i read that about the bard. but i wonder how fun it is to just let your summones do all the work.
wonder how hard it really is. maybe i should try, i got this IMMENSELY powerful character with witch i beat the dragon i Suldanessalar without losing a single hp.
...but i've just finished the game with him, do i have the stamina to start all over again? ...

ho ho ho:laugh: ever thought about getting into the stand-up buissnes? haha no i think you got what i tried to say
but you know what? since the last time i wrote i've started over and this time i will go for the ironman!
this time i'm going to try to pull it through with a fighter/thief/mage. and though the cap is small, i'm soloing and usually ends up with a far more powerful character then i really want so...
right know i'm right in the middle of irenucus' dungeon, but it is allready more exciting and fun then my load-load saves. i've had one reeeally close call, survived with 1 hp!!
hehe. but this should be fun.

Seems do-able with a f/m/t
I did read somewhere about a swashbuckler>cleric class somewhere whom in my opininon can do just as good. As for to whether or not they can solo bg1 tho without mage spells...
r/cleric seems a good choice tho for soloing - believe me i would know - spent weeks in another thread talking about them and their cheesiness (is that a word
?) since they have an incorrect and ultimately unfair advantage - either the r/c or a bushwacker/cleric might be able to go all the way.

i don't see what's so cheese about a ranger/cleric exept that you get all the divine spells, i mean you still just get the clerics numbe of spells ?? or am i missing something? how many attacks do you get and how many proficency points can you get in one weapon?
and Cwell, a challange? do you mean that we should do the ironman all and ..? yeah what do you mean

ok, but what about the rules. i say no mods, just play the game plain. abuse and cheese as much as you like (or as much as your moral allows) as long as it's done within the games rules, ok?
so, as many members in your team as you want. but no importing, neither characters nor items, and no clua console. not even the ctrl+j for transporting purposes. and no ctrl+8 to max the stats in the character creation.
but i don't think that we should do this a race, so no "first to beat the game wins", the challenge should lie in completing the game at all, so i say we let each other go through the game at our own speeds. we most deffinitly have different much sparetime to play on and different characters' tactics takes different much time to use.
i also say that if one of us should die, it's no big deal. if you're still up for the challenge just start over again.
anyone have any issues on this?
so who's up for this ironman!?

Also, no spam.
If you (meaning anybody) only want to bragg or talk trash at somebody else's efforts, this thread will be closed, and you'll all be directed to SYM (Speak Your Mind), our forum for serious and silly nonsense.
With that in mind, proceed.

This would be an interesting project; I look forward to reading your efforts, not least because I only ever play the game in this way (but always end up dying and reloading at some point).
You may be interested to read how other people have gone about this. Do a search on "deathless journey" to see a more "RP" style of journal.

ok, but i loocks like i'm the only one here doing this as this very moment.
so, if i'm to report my progress.
i'm soloing an half-elf fighter/thief/mage. in irenicus' dungeon i died a couple of times
i died because i'm ever so eager, and toke to many chanses. but since this was in the very beginning it was no big deal starting over with the same character (but recreated)
ok. the spells i used was, magic missile (used it as a quick damaging spell between my blows with dual scimitars), blur and mirror image (this is the life saving combo, especially in the begining. and the blur's +3 ac is very welcome since i can't wear any armor). another spell to highly recomend in the begining wih a f/t/m is the 1 level spell armor with its duration of 9h.
slow and fireball also helped a lot. i choosed fireball instead of skulltrap because the fireball can be cast within visual sight, not the skulltrap, and that meaned i could hide and blast the enemies i found before they could attack me. a bit into the dungeon i got a forth level slot, but no forht level scroll
and about the thief skills, in the beginning i put most of my skill points on the find trap, because the traps are deadly in this dungeon; so about 75 is neaded, at least (just think of the mistress' room!) i kept move silent down because i didn't need to be invinsible for that long periods. the hide skill i didn't put that much in, neither the open locks, those are needed first when you get out in athkatla. and as good as no points in detect illusion, the same as the hide and open locks, illusions begin to annoy first when you get into athkatla.
so the dungeon in itself went well (the 3 deaths learned me the tactics required). outside of his dungeon i first whent to sell all the stuff. then i went to the slums and galhean (hmm that wasn't correct spellt was it?)
when your at this point your very, very vunerable, so i went to the circus, that yields a desent amount of xp and don't involve any hard battles. (tip for item buyng, i'm evil and has low rep. and i have 3 cha, so items will be redicilously expensive. but it helps a lot to equip ring of human influense and cast friends, that gives me 24 cha!
)
for the money i earned i bought scrolls, like stoneskin and minor globe of invunerability. and then i went to the docks and talked to renal bloodscalp. i did mae'vars housebreak in the temple of talos, but when i got to edwin's assassination of that cowled wizard i stoped, didn't want do battle those stone golems in his quarters.
so instead i went to the goverment district. there i bought the spell casting license and said yes to the hunt for valygar. (this time i want to get the planar phere, i've never had that stronghold before).
so i went to the city gates, i was attacked by some slavers and manage to kill them all with web, blur, stoneskin, mirror image, slow and a potion of invisibility that i found in renals place. in the gate area i agread to the trademeat quest by speaking to the fella' standing by that wagon. then i got to umar hills, and that's how far i've got. hope i intrest someone with my neverending babble.
