Game skipped a quest

I'm in Bravil trying to get a recommendation - apparently I need to talk to Kud-Ei to activate a quest for a staff. I was distracted when going through the conversation options and suddenly I find myself on a completely different quest called Through a Nightmare Darkly, which apparently I should only get AFTER I finished the recommendation!
I have tried bringing up other conversations with her but nothing leads onto the recommendation quest.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what happened, and how I can get back to the recommendation?

Highlight: Kud Ei is the trigger for both quests. You would have gotten the "Through a Nightmare, Darkly" by selecting the rumors option. The recommendation option should still be there if you haven't already triggered it. If you have, then Kud Ei should have given you a scroll to help in the quest (Beguile). If you do not have the scroll, then the quest was not activated. If you do, then you just have to make the recommendation quest your active quest and you should be on your way.

No........I have no Beguile scroll, and I can't get her to talk about anything else. I do know I have a bounty on my head..would that make a difference?

So are you saying to get the scroll, I have to make it my active quest? Cause right now Im 90%sure I started the recomendation, and I have seen Varon, but never found out how to talk to him. Ill ge try making it active right now.

Where can I find Varon? He doesn't seem to be in the guild, and he's only mentioned once, briefly. No quest is added to my list either........

Wait till its 9 AM and he should be pacing around the guild somewhere.

@Maximus. An NPC's disposition can effect what topics are offered in their dialogue menu, though I have not heard this to be a problem with Kud Ei. Try using a spell (charm, beguile) to raise her disposition or try your luck at the Persuasion wheel. If you have a current bounty on your head, a guard should have shown up immediately to give you the pat down. After paying the fine, the bounty should go away.

If you did not get the Beguile scroll from Kud Ei, then the recommendation quest was not activated and thus not in your list of quests. You can try the above, but it sounds like (gulp) you might need to go back to a saved game before your first contact with her.

@Madd. You definately need Varon's dispostion raised to at least 65 before he will discuss Ardaline and her staff. Kud Ei should have given you the Beguile scroll during the recommendation discussion. Check your inventory. You can always use a charm spell (Beguiling Touch) on Varon to the same effect.

as far I remember the scrolls are given only by advance conversation... May be you had not talked all options.

Thanks guys......I did try loading a save game from (much) earlier, same result. I'll try finding Varon and see what happens....actually the Recommendation option did come up, but was over in a flash and never showed up as a quest. She did tell me to speak to Varon but I have no scroll.......I'll try showing up after 9!

well I think I solve d the problem.......the scroll bar to the left of the conversation options, which I conveniently ignored!

Just in case anyone hasnt igured it out, open the Current Quests list, find an select this recomendation (forgot the name), and activate it. Then speak to Kud-Ei again.
