I picked up the 1st level Druid Melany by having one of my characters marry her, but now I have a big problem.
When I loot dead bodies of creatures, Melany grabs items that are too heavy for her to carry. She then gets encumbered to the point of not being able to move. She won't drop the items, and I cannot get rid of her because she is married to one of my characters!
Any way around this, or is my game over?
How about THIS problem

There are solutions to this problem. It's common to all the NPCs, really.
My recommendations, in order of preference:
1. Use Drifter's Humble NPC Patch. There's a stick thread about this at the top of the forum.
2. Fill her inventory with light items like gloves, and she can't loot anything but money.
3. Get her killed or kill her with the console. Click on the little symbol in the corner to remove her from your party after she drops.

(Use the lastest 1.3 build - it's still beta, but stable and far better than 1.2)

When you go to sell items
I discovered that if you go to the Taylor (forgot his name) in Hommlett first and try to sell to him, he won't buy anything from the NPC except perhaps crossbows (IIRC). After this first "sell" attempt, you can remove ANYTHING in the NPC's backpack and add to your own PC backpacks. This doesn't solve the weight issue but as LP pointed out you fill her backpack with all kinds of light weight stuff so she won't pick up loot.

UNCOMMON VALOR WAS A COMMON VIRTUE
I've applied patch #3, but the NPCs still take most of the treasure and get over-loaded.
I'll have to wait for Melany to die in order to get the magic scale off of her!
I tried the Tailor -but it didn't work.
You think they would have tested this before releasing the game!
Arcanem didn't have anywhere near the number of problems.

Sorry it didn't work
I haven't patched mine. I guess one of the patchs fixed the little loophole I found with the taylor. Can you go back to previously saved point and start that section of the game again? This time you can fill the slots before looting.
Oh yes, just remembered. You can avoid the looting bug with bodies if you "don't" immediately loot the bodies after you kill them (won't work for the random road encounters since you cannot return to those locations but will for the set places). Instead leave the area until the bodies disappear (about 16 to 24 hours IIRC) then return and pick up the stuff from the ground/floor. The followers will NOT loot the stuff. It is a little inconvenient but has worked for me.
One NPC I did an easy work around with is Spugnoir. He only loots mage scrolls. I have him use read magic on the scroll (free unlike identify) and then have him add the scroll to his spell book. He has the skill to scribe scrolls so I then have him make a scroll of that spell. You can take any scroll he scribes from him and add to your inventory. It costs a small amount of gold but isn't too bad.

I'm not 100% sure it's compatible with patch 3, though. Best setup would be patch 2, then temple.zip, and then the NPC patch. Runs like a dream.
(BTW, Atari forced Troika to relese ToEE before they were ready. It had lots of problems when it came out, but they're pretty much ALL solved now, if you take the time to patch correctly. Playing this game unpatched or improperly patched is just asking for major annoyance and frustration.)

It's not compatable with patch 3, but this one is... http://www.sorcerers.net/Games/dl.php?s ... for_v3.zip
