Hi,
It's my first time going through BGII, and I'm trying to get from the Graveyard District to the Bridge District, but keep on getting waylaid by six Orogs and two slavers that butcher my party. They tend to immediately surround my party and hack my weakest members to death (Aerie, Nalia). I've tried escaping but all the exits seem to vanish once waylaid...I've also tried going from Graveyard District to other districts first, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Is there any way to either avoid them, or for a low-level party (level 8) to defeat them?
Thanks for any help.

There are exits but these exits are close to the top/bottom of the screen, I do know of one exit that was difficult to find since it was in-between an underpass and there was debris around it but it was there.
If you are having trouble saving (character) try changing party formation to protect the weakest member then that member (typically spellcasting) can be used either offensively or defensively to help against the attackers.

The encounter will happen when you leave the graveyard area, regardless where you move.
You can enter the graveyard crypts to fight there and improve your party XP and equipment there.
You can also rest there.
Cast "protection from evil 10 foot" and other buffing spells like stoneskin, blur, mirror image, armor, aid, haste even before you leave the graveyard area.
Pause the game while casting simultanously and use the right spell order or the first spell effects will be gone before the last spells are cast.
Have your mages recast mirror image when they get hurt at the encounter.
Don't flee with your party.

[QUOTE=Lady Viola]Thanks for the advice! I figured it out; Mirror image was especially helpful, and I polymorphed some of them into squirrels.

First time I hear someone actually used polymorph!
Well, I'd use mirror image and some simple area spell. Glitterdust works wonders, cause it blinds everyone (or at least many of the orogs). Death spell (if you're at high levels) causes instant death of those guys (afaik), and its casted fairly quick, so you should try.

Well the easiest ways to take out those slavers and so forth are disabiling spells like Fear, Emotion, confusion and Chaos. The great thing about these spells is they have good sized area affects (not sure about Confusion) and are cheap and fast to cast.
I usually cast Greater Malison at the start of a fight and hit with Emotion immediately after leaving very little effort to win what's left.

Stoneskin helps too
Stoneskin is instantaneous and usually buys Nalia or Aerie enough time to snake through the mob and get around to behind the tanks. If any of bad guys try to follow them around I just keep running them around for a bit until one of the fighter types is free to intervene.

UNCOMMON VALOR WAS A COMMON VIRTUE
Have a mage cast Emotion, I did this last time and ALL of them just lay on the ground allowing me to hack them at leisure. If you have two spellcasters, you can make the second cast another crowd-control type spell just to be safe, I like entangle personally but chaos is also great. Should get through the encounter without losing a single HP.
