swashbuckler prof. and dual wielding

Post by Emnelion »

Ok, first I have to ask why swashbucklers don't get that extra ½ attack / round they should get when spesialized in a weapon?
I mean, that extra ½ attack is the reson you spesialize anyway.
I get spesialized with my cleric/swashbuckler but still ends up with a single attack / round.

My other question is, or it's more of a statment wich I would like confirmed;
proficency bonuses don't apply to weapons held in the off hand right?
I know the extra attacks don't, but don't the damage and hit bonuses apply?

Frankly, to both, I think they should.

The extra half attack should be there - dumb question - you are using a weapon of the correct class, right?

For the to hit and damage bonuses, yes, they should apply to weapons in either hand. You can test this out by getting unenchanted weapons and sticking them in both hands, then swapping around weapons that you are specialized in and ones you're not - you should see the thaco change based on proficiency regardless of the hand. Granted, your off-hand still has a worse penalty, even if you put three proficiency points in dual wielding, but the change to that thaco should be evident based on weapon proficiency.

For some reason, Swashbucklers don't appear to get the extra ½ attack from specialization (still worth it for the +1/+2 in my opinion), perhaps because they don't get any Fighter-style extra attacks either. This leaves them 1½ attacks behind in the end. They also lack Greater Whirlwind as HLA, but they do get the natural damage bonuses, making any extra attacks you give a swashbuckler worth more than ones on Fighters, which is why I strive to give my Swashbuckler items granting extra attacks (Gauntlets of Extraordinary Weapon Specialization (½ extra attack, needs UAI to use), Belm +2 (full extra attack, can be used naturally), Scarlet Ninja-To +3 (full extra attack, needs UAI)). Then again, since you're Cleric/Swashbuckler, you don't probably have an access to UAI and Cleric-restrictions (only blunt weapons) apply, right? If that's the case, you'll just have to get by with that single attack/two attacks per turn.

To the second, they do apply to both hands, at least in my experience. When dualwielding +2 Longswords with Specialization and 3 points in two-weapon fighting, hand 1 has THAC0 2 points lower than that of hand 2, which is a result of the -2 to the off-hand even with 3 points in two-weapon fighting. The extra attack does not apply to dualwielding even with Fighter-type classes though.

Mm yeah, just get the clerics blunt weapons. But that's just good because they do more damage, and it's only the club and the quarterstaff you can use for backstabbs, were I not a swashbuckler.

But I do get acces to UAI. So I'll probably aim for the Gauntlets of Extraordinary Weapon Spesialization. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with 2 attacks with the Fail of Ages and Crom Faeyr. :p
ok, thanks a lot.
