Deathlord...Fighter->Marauder->DeathLord...
medium dual weapons of course and they are no such heavy dual skill in the game.
Some say Lord can also use medium duals but i didnt test it. I have a female valkyrie-death lord and she is a blade dancer in hard level and she is invincible (almost - level 20 for now).

light duel - heavy dual
I was playing a samurii in ver 1.4 and it allowed me to use the heavy weapon
no-dachi in my main hand and a light weapon in my off hand, which I thought
was pretty cool since I only had light duel. I am trying to get to deathlord
with my new game to see if it allows you to use a heavy weapon and a
medium weapon at the same time. Does anyone know?

The dual wield skills control what weapons you can use in your off hand. So medium dual wield would allow you to use a medium weapon in your off hand.

Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

yes no-dachi is a good starting weapon, later you will have some nice one handed heavy blades and use some katana like medium weapons and you will see some massive damage when you dance with your sword around.
If you choose deathlord path of course. This is called "daisho" (two weapon wield) and only deathlord may wield medium as secondary.
*spoiler*
but becoming a deathlord needs really really huge amount of experience, but when you wield the katana of the sun on off-hand you will think it worths, especially with bleeding wound ability.
